Emi and Maou: Do They End Up Together in The Devil is a Part-Timer?

The Devil Is a Part-Timer is among the few animes with a perfect balance of action and comedy.

Fans loved the concept of the Hero and the Demon King working together in a marriage of convenience tackling third-world problems in modern Japan upon the series’ release in 2019.

Since then, anime fans have wondered if Maou and Emi will fall for each other by the end of the anime or if they will have other love interests.

In this article, we find out everything there is to know regarding Maou and Emi’s love life.

1. Does Maou Love Emi?

Maou has romantic feelings for Emi. Many moments in the series mentioned how Maou likes Emi and wants to be with her more.

However, things were different in their initial meeting in Japan when they did not know each other’s identities. Maou was surprised when Emi revealed who she was, but he remained relatively impassive until she pulled a knife out to kill him.

After this Encounter, Emi dedicates her time to spying on him in case he reverts to his demon ways. At the same time, Maou remains more irritated by her presence than anything else.

They stayed pretty hostile to one another for some time, but ultimately, they agreed to a truce. Maou has become more at ease in her company due to his frequent interactions with Emi, almost as if their hatred never existed.

A turning point in their relationship was brought about when they began taking care of the Alas Ramus, a sentient Yesod fragment, who took the form of a young child who believes him to be her “papa” and Emi, her “mama.”

Since then, the two have steadily grown closer while being forced to act as a family, with both slowly falling into the roles of parents over time.

When Maou offered to show Emi a new world after naming her a Demon General, he found her flushed expression very cute and wanted to see more of it. After Emi shows him a smile seeking comfort, he feels that her smile is precious but does not know why he feels that way.

Emi’s radiant smile faded the dark feelings in his heart, and he felt awkward when he left. This smile has a lasting impact on him, and he is reminded of it again during an event following Emi’s rescue from Ente Isla.

2. Does Emi Love Maou?

Emi loves Maou. After the hero learns that her father is alive and well and not killed by Maou’s army as she had thought, most of her animosity toward the Demon King vanishes, and she develops romantic feelings for him.

The Demon King’s forces had destroyed Emilia’s village, and her father was presumed killed. To take him down, she took up her duty as the Hero, and they became mortal enemies.

As soon as Emi learned of who Maou was on earth, she pulled a knife out to kill him, harboring the same hate as they had back in Ente Isla.

After Maou shows her kindness and concern, Emi confronts him over this change, noting he is much different from the Demon King she fought back home.

Actually, After losing her father back in Ente Isla, Emi came to see Maou as a monster who delights in wreaking havoc and slaughter. Because her conception of the Demon Lord was at odds with his humanity, witnessing his generosity was a tremendous shock to her.

While she was held hostage in Ente Isla, Emi accepted that Maou’s personality as a human was not a ruse and that he was genuinely a kind and caring person at heart.

After this incident, Emi’s demeanor with Maou changes drastically – she is not hotheaded but calm, openly showing her gratitude to him, and treats him more like a friend than an enemy. Her radical behavior change shakes Maou, and she does not know how to interact with her.

As Emi experiences a mental breakdown resulting from the arrival of her long-lost mother, who has secretly been pulling the strings from the shadows, she openly clings to Maou for support despite how her actions might be misinterpreted.

Throughout the Ente Isla incident and the events afterward, it becomes clear to others that Emi truly loves Maou. During the confrontation with Lucifer and Olba, Emi is shocked when she realizes that the smile on the newly restored Devil King’s face is charming/adorable.

Emi develops feelings for him but struggles to reconcile them due to their previous history and knowing Chiho is also in love with Maou.

3. Do They End Up Together?

Maou and Emi do not end up together by the end of The Devil is a Part-Timer! In the LN’s Volume 21, Emi is shown to be a principal shareholder who works closely with Maou in his restaurant. The epilogue shows the duo harbor no romantic feelings for one another.

Despite all the interactions that hinted towards Emi and Maou becoming a couple by the end of the LN, the author of the series, Satoshi Wagahara, ended up ‘butchering the ending’ in my and the majority of the fans’ opinion by killing whatever was going on between the duo.

I couldn’t think of a single reason why the Maou-Emi duo wouldn’t have been perfect and why the author decided just to make them stay friends.

4. Who do Maou and Emi end up With?

After reading thus far, this is the next question that naturally arises. Who do they end up with if they don’t get together by the end of the series?

I. Sadao Maou

Maou ends with Chiho Sasaki by the end of The Devil Is a Part-Timer! In Volume 21, Maou becomes a human and accepts Chiho’s romantic feelings, discussing marriage after Chiho graduates’ college.

This was always possible as Chiho had an undeniable crush on Maou since the start.

Back when Maou first asked Chiho how she felt about being around a Demon Lord like him, Chiho responded she would be lying if she said it didn’t bother her, but she was already in love with Sadao and that it was going to take a lot more to make her stop liking him.

II. Emi Yusa

Emi remains single by the end of the LN and has no romantic partner.

5. About The Devil is a Part-Timer!

The Devil Is a Part-Timer! is a Japanese light novel series written by Satoshi Wagahara, with illustrations by Oniku (written as 029). ASCII Media Works has published the series in Japan, while Yen Press has published the series in North America.

The story revolves around the Demon Lord Satan after he is stuck in the human world. Satan loses against the hero Emilia in his homeworld Ente Isla. He then takes one of his subordinates – Alciel and transports himself to the human world, where he is left powerless due to the lack of magic.

Both Satan and Alciel take human forms, and Satan takes up a part-time job at a fast-food restaurant to earn a living. Things get even more complicated once Emilia arrives under the guise of a human named Emi Yusa. This light-hearted comedy explores the interactions of “evil” and “good.”
