The last two chapters of the Boruto manga, 53 and 54, came out as a massive shock to the entire fandom. Not only did the legendary Naruto x Kurama duo got broken, but Sasuke Uchiha has also lost his Rinnegan.
KABOOM, right? Since the beginning, the Boruto manga has followed a path where Boruto and Kawaki would become the new dynamic duo. For that to happen, Sasuke and Naruto were going to get crippled sooner or later. I just didn’t think it’d happen in such a brutal way. Yes, I am still getting over Kurama’s loss; stop judging… 🙁
Chapter 54 starts with Naruto and Kurama talking to each other when Kurama explains how he purposely misled Naruto into believing that Baryon mode won’t lead to Kurama’s death. With that, Kurama bids farewell to his partner and dies as we see his chakra fading away. Sasuke being Sasuke makes an analytical comment that this is at least a better alternative than both Kurama and Naruto dying.
When Kawaki mentions that they can still talk about this once they are in Konoha, Sasuke asks Boruto to transport them due to the loss of the former’s ability to create portals.
What happened to Sasuke’s Rinnegan?
Let’s back up a little bit for this.
Sasuke lost his Rinnegan in Boruto chapter 53 when Momoshiki-controlled Boruto stabbed his eye with a kunai. He lost all Rinnegan abilities, such as the space-time ninjutsu, planetary devastation and chakra absorption.
When Boruto felt sad and responsible, Sasuke tells him that it’s not Boruto’s fault and all of them were prepared to die when they decided to fight Isshiki Ohtsutsuki. It is nothing short of a miracle that all of them survived.
While Sasuke is making a brave face in front of Boruto, we can all agree this was a HUGE loss for Sasuke. The second strongest shinobi in the world, Sasuke Uchiha – the Shadow Shinobi, has officially lost his Rinnegan and, with that, his god-level status.
Let’s talk about what all is left in Sasuke’s arsenal and whether he can retain the title of second strongest or not. I believe that can, and here’s why.
First of all, the modern era’s shinobis are not that strong in the first place, so the bar itself is set pretty low. If you remember the fight between Five Kages and Momoshiki x Kinishiki, it was even more one-sided than Madara vs the Five Kage.
Gaara is nowhere near as strong and ferocious as we saw him during the Fourth Great Ninja War. Even if you can stand Gaara being weak, the others are just too pathetic to be called Kages! Chojuro, Darui and Kurotsuchi are no match for the Mei of Lava style, lightning-fast A (third Raikage) and Ohnoki – the Particle-style user, respectively.
Believe it or not, the peaceful era has downgraded what it means to be a shinobi and their overall strength. Secondly, Sasuke was too powerful even without the Rinnegan; he didn’t have Rinnegan until Naruto Shippuden’s end and was a badass fighter in the entire series.
Sasuke currently has access to his Susanoo, genjutsu, all forms of Chidori, Fire and Lightning release and other signature jutsu.
Will Sasuke get his Rinnegan back? Does he need it?
While Sasuke getting his Rinnegan back would significantly boost his current power level, it will not happen due to him not being the show’s protagonist anymore.
Also, I think he doesn’t need his Rinnegan anymore. Let me explain – after reading chapter 54, I went to Naruto’s subreddit to see how everyone is coping up with this loss; during this, I got into an argument with a couple of Redditors, and we made some excellent points.
Rinnegan might not equal Rinnegan Powers
The first topic we discussed was Tobirama’s statement about the fundamental of Uchiha powers – the Sharingan.
the root of Uchiha’s powers is their love, greater than anyone else’s. But when they lose someone they love, their love is changed into hate. And this emotion of theirs is reflected by their eyes. That’s the reason it is called “the eye that reflects the heart”.Tobirama Senju
This means that the powers and all the Uchiha abilities come from within a Shinobi’s blood, hence the word “Kekkei Genkai.” The eyes are nothing but the projectors for that power. In this case, Sasuke has all the abilities of Rinnegan within him since he’s the direct descendant of Indra and thus Hagoromo; he just needs a tool to access it.
With the help of scientific prodigy Amado, the excellent healer Sakura, and the Uchiha anatomy expert Orochimaru, Sasuke can create an artificial Rinnegan.
Why can’t every Uchiha use these powers?
The next difficulty our theory faced was a question by a very smart Redditor, “If the power comes from within the blood, why can’t every Uchiha access it?”
This can be explained by Edo Madara using Susanoo without either eye, let alone a Sharingan or a Mangekyou Sharingan; the same thing happened when Shisui activated Susanoo with only one eye. Does it mean you don’t need a Mangekyou to activate a Susanoo? Yes and No.
You need a Mangekyou Sharingan to activate Susanoo for the first time, that’s why Madara and Shisui were able to access their respective Susanoo later, but Kakashi still can’t. It’s in their blood. If my theory is right, Sasuke’s Rinnegan powers reside within his Indra blood and just need a tool to access.
Wait, is Rinnegan’s loss better for Sasuke’s future?
Indirectly related to Rinnegan, we ended up discussing one more thing – will losing Rinngean for the time being lead to Sasuke’s further growth?
I think we can all agree that Sasuke has not been the badass shinobi in Boruto that he used to be in Naruto and Naruto Shippuden. The guy who used a wide variety of jutsu and planned his strategies ten steps ahead of his opponents is no more. Sasuke has been getting caught off guard literally since the beginning of the Boruto manga, first with Kinishiki and now with Borushiki.
In addition to this, we can always see him fighting with fewer chakra reserves due to the excessive use of chakra-hungry space-time ninjutsu. The Sasuke we knew back during the war would never use any move that could later put him at a disadvantage if things went South. This is the least you expect from a guy who used his opponent’s hand (Naruto’s) during a fight to create a hand seal and launch fireball jutsu.
So, maybe, Sasuke should revisit his old fighting style without depending on his godly powers.
