Superman & Lois episode 5, which dropped earlier this week, establishes Clark Kent as the best comic book dad to ever exist. Raised up in the suburban town of Smallville by loving (adoptive) parents John and Martha Kent, it comes as no wonder that good parenting comes naturally to Clark.
Episode 5, titled “The Best of Smallville”, deals with Martha’s legacy as the town commences its first Harvest Festival since her death. As he is reminded of what his mother meant to him, Clark comes face-to-face with his emotional grapplings caused by Martha’s passing away.
Meanwhile, after having faked the delight of moving into a new environment, Jonathan finally faces a roadblock when the family finds out about Jordan’s superpower abilities, making the former feel out of place. Things worsen when Jonathan is dumped by his girlfriend Eliza, on the day she is supposed to visit their house, becoming the last straw before he snaps.
Frustrated by it all, Jonathan gets drunk and goes so far as to suggest he move out to live with family friends in Metropolis. However, instead of punishing Jonathan for his emotional explosion, Clark employs the same parenting style as John and Martha by treating his son with empathy.
As someone who’s felt lost before, Clark understands what Jonathan is going through and talks it out with him. He lets Jonathan off the hook for the drinking by giving him a one-time “get out of jail free card” and promises that if his second chance at settling in the town fails, they will revisit the conversation about Jonathan moving out.
Clark’s actions are distinctly reminiscent of his relationship with his parents, specifically how Martha helped navigate his journey of self-discovery as a superhero living amongst human society. Not only does Clark’s fatherhood pay homage to his parents, but it also elicits awe among audiences as he takes up the role just as well as taking up the mantle of Superman.
