After Just Mercy, Warner Bros has come forward to make the season one of comic Wyatt Cenac’s late-night show-Wyatt Cenac’s Problem Areas freely available on YouTube. Released in 2018, the first season of Cenac’s show remains relevant as it was back then. Instead of covering the news of the week, like its counterparts, this late-night show digs into the issues faced by Black America every day.
For instance, Episode 1 covers the 2016 murder of Philando Castile, a 32-year-old black man, who was shot dead by Minnesota police while he was with his partner and young daughter.
From the infrastructures facilitating these heartbreaking and oft-repeated instances of police brutality and abuse of power to disproportionate murders of people of colour by the police, the show touches on some serious topics.
The show is a great source of information on the realities going on, which also covers gun control, mental health, public education, and drugs in the first season.
The show takes all perspectives into account, from the community activists to politicians to police themselves. Cenac’s humor makes this rather heavy-hearted watch a digestible one. It is a great starting point for those only starting to understand where the massive protests ongoing in America are coming.
HBO’s show of solidarity with the Equal Justice Initiative and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund will further include a free selection of videos to be streamed online.
“We have curated a collection of programming around the continued fight for Civil Rights on our streaming platforms, and select programs will be made available for free on our YouTube channel. #BlackLivesMatter,” HBO stated in a recent post on Instagram.
Apart from Wyatt Cenac’s Problem Areas, HBO has also included a full episode of Vice: Raised in the System, episode 1 of Random Acts of Flyness, and a full film of Anna Deavere Smith’s play Notes From The Field in its free video lineup.
You can stream all 10 episodes of Season 1 on the HBO YouTube channel.
