13 Reasons Why Final Season 4 Release Date – Everything you need to know

What to watch out for in the fourth and final season of 13 Reasons Why, coming out June 5

At last the final edition of the controversial and seemingly never ending teen crime drama 13 Reasons Why is set for release. Even though the show had announced a fourth season even before the third one had aired, the season 4 trailer this week, came as a surprise to many.

Meanwhile, June 5 is the date set for the beginning of the end and the show’s Pulitzer-winning writer Brian Yorkey has promised a showstopper.

First things first. Why are people surprised at a new season. Based, albeit loosely, on the 2007 novel by author Jay Asher, the show had long surpassed the books contents somewhere in the second season. The show already felt like a drag by season 2, in that it had lost rhythm and tautness of its script.

However, writer and showrunner Brian Yorkey decided to make it a four season high school show around this time… since high school lasts for four years.

Secondly, he is sure that this is where the story of Hannah Baker and her schoolmates comes to an end.

“I’d be very interested to see how some of these characters do at college but I love the idea also of leaving that up to all of our imaginations,” Yorkey told Entertainment Weekly.

What’s new in season 4?

The show’s crazy first season was enough for fans to stick around for rounds 2 and 3 to make 13 Reasons Why one of the most watched teen soaps of America. From gun violence, sexual assault, bullying to murder included in the show’s plot, its creators had a voracious appetite for everything that remained missing from TV dramas for young adults.

In its fourth edition, all the lead characters will be completing their high school and leaving for college.

“But before they say goodbye, they’ll have to keep a dangerous secret buried and face heartbreaking choices that could impact their futures forever,” says the official Netflix synopsis.

Meanwhile, there were some obvious loose ends from season 3 like the unclaimed bag full of guns or Monty’s (Timothy Granaderos) undeserved jail sentence for Bryce Walker’s (Justin Prentice) murder and consequently, his death.

The season 4 trailer also hinted at the disturbed mental health of Clay (Dylan Minnette), who has started seeing a shrink, played by the veteran actor Gary Sinise.

The trailer also showed us all the faces we can expect to see again in the final season. Brandon Flynn will return as Justin Foley and Alisha Boe as Jessica Davis. Others include Tony (Christian Navarro), Alex (Miles Heizer), Tyler (Devin Druid), Zach (Ross Butler) and Winston (Deaken Bluman).

We will also see if Winston, Monty’s beau, will the gang’s grand frame up for Bryce Walker’s murder. Bryce will likely be limited to flashbacks while Hannah Baker (Katherine Langford) is expected to remain unseen, considering Langford’s exit from the show after its second season. However, since it was with her death that the show first began, we can expect a tribute of sorts in the finale. But nothing more.

One expensive season

According to the THR, season 4 has been one of the priciest TV show seasons. Not only did the whole cast receive a huge pay rise, the parent production company Paramount TV is charging Netflix a huge premium on the licensing fee.

Over the last four seasons, the show has had a total of 16 directors. For the season 4 we have 2 confirmed names, including that of Emmy-winner Michael Sucsy of The Vow’s fame and Sunu Gonera.
