Zendaya Commits to 3 Months of Extensive Training for Challengers

Emmy Award winner Zendaya will make her comeback in 2023 with not one but two movies! Zendaya, who recently won at the Emmys for her portrayal of Rue in Euphoria, has starred in multiple box office hits, including Euphoria, Dune, and the most recent Spider-Man: No Way Home.

After a 2-year gap, Zendaya will return with two films in 2023, namely Dune: Part Two and Challengers. Challengers is an upcoming sports comedy that traverses the relationship between three tennis players who reunite at the Grand Slam and rehash old rivalries and breakups.

Challengers is a challenging role for Zendaya since it’s so different from the parts she usually plays, but she’s not the only one diving out of their comfort zone.

The film’s director, Luca Guadagninio, known for films like Suspiria and Call Me by Your Name, is taking a diversion to make a typical rom-com. But if we know anything about the director’s style, we know he’ll also make a hit with Challengers.

Speaking with Variety at the Academy Museum Gala, Guadagnino praised his actors for their hard work and spectacular performances in the film. Singling Zendaya out, the Suspiria director said she’s “wonderful” and specified how all of the cast went through 3 months of extensive training for the film.

She’s wonderful. I mean, wow. We edited the movie, and we almost actually don’t use any of her double. She’s so good. They spent like three months working very hard. Everybody – technically, athletically.

Zendaya’s work ethic is commendable, as are Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist’s. Challengers will be Zendaya’s first project after her Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021). But unlike the MCU film, Zendaya will be in the spotlight in the 2023 movie alongside Faist and O’Connor.
