Zack Snyder Talks about Alpha Zombie Zeus’ Origin and Prequel

Zack Snyder, the writer and director of Netflix’s zombie-heist film Army of the Dead, revealed some details about the alpha zombie Zeus, the upcoming prequel’s storyline, and how it’ll connect with Zeus’ origin.

In an online stream with The Film Junkee, talking about Zeus’ origin, he explained,

“Richards is his name. The soldier that is Zeus, but he had a name; he was a guy before. Something happened to him… He did volunteer for something, but it wasn’t what he thought… He also went on a mission. It wasn’t just like, come to this facility and train. He went on a quest on his own and came back as this thing.”

With the prequel film, Army of Thieves, already in post-production and a prequel anime series, Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas, in development, the stories will have a lot to unpack.

During a virtual convention, Justice Con, Zack Snyder confirmed that Area 51 is involved in the zombies’ origin story.

“It’s exciting. Just the kind of this world that we’ve created and these zombies and their mythology and like where they come from, which is a mindbender anyway when you actually see it. I mean, it’s not in the movie a hundred percent. It’s implied in the movie.

But in the animated series, we actually go, and we go all the way. I don’t think it ruins anything to say Area 51 is involved. Of course, it is. When you say it out loud, you’re like, I guess zombies do come from Area 51. Wouldn’t that make sense? It’s right there. Why would they put Las Vegas so close to Area 51? That feels like a mistake.”

Area 51 is the common name of a highly classified United States Air Force facility located within the Nevada Test and Training Range. The secrecy surrounding Area 51 has often led to many conspiracy theories including UFOs and alien sightings.
