Young Sheldon: Onset of Missy’s “Difficult Phase”

Ever since Young Sheldon has taken up explaining Sheldon’s college life, Georgie’s baby situation with Mandy, and George and Mary’s failing marriage, one of the integral parts of the Cooper family has gone overlooked. Yes, Missy Cooper, one of the fan-favorites, hasn’t had a decent arc for almost an entire season now.

But the latest episode of season 6 of Young Sheldon has brought to light the actual moment when Missy’s rebellious phase began, and if you thought it was sad before, you’ve got another thing coming.

According to TBBT canon, George’s death greatly affected Missy since she was closer to her father than anyone else in her family. In fact, George even mentions how attached she is to him in episode 16 as Linda and the Cooper parents drive to their daughters.

It would make sense that she would go down a darker road after George’s death, leading to the future TBBT has laid out for her – a hostess at a local joint with a failing marriage and a second child along the way.

But Young Sheldon changes that, addressing her “difficult phase” much before George’s eventual death. Her running away with Paige because she felt she was overlooked, was the beginning of her rebellious years, and she would go on to do more, as Older Sheldon mentions in his voiceover.

So Missy didn’t act out because her father died but because her parents either failed to pay attention to her or reined over her with overbearing control. And isn’t that more devastatingly relatable than the story The Big Bang Theory outlined for her teen years?

But there’s hope still! Even though TBBT has already chosen her end, Young Sheldon can fill her story’s middle with some good moments. Missy has been the more emotionally mature sibling among the Cooper children. The show can build on her narrative and let her shine during Mary and George’s divorce.
