The Vertigo comic (created by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra) Y: The Last Man presents us with a very interesting scenario: What happens when all mammals possessing the Y chromosome are wiped? All but one.

In 2002, due to an unexplained mishap, all male species die off in an instant. This cataclysmic moment creates chaos. For example, automobiles being run by the now-dead men causes crashes and destruction, and somehow leaves the world worse for the surviving – The women who are apprehensive or grieving, with the dooming realisation that this may very well be the end of humankind.

The sole survivor Yorick Brown and his pet monkey, are now not only one of their “kind”, but also must straddle between protecting themselves and helping to further human population by cloning themselves.

Y: The Last Man has been over 10 years in the making, initially starting off with a 2007 movie that eventually fell through. One of the main issues it faced was taking in the wide berth of the comics and fitting it into a 2-hour movie. Rewrites of the movie sought to break it into different parts to slowly fill in 60-odd issues.

In 2014, the rights of the film ultimately went back to creators Vaughan and Guerra. And it seems like it was for the better, as Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson would come in as executive producers for the 2018 FX-ordered pilot.

Our lone man standing will be played by Ben Schnetzer. Yorick’s mom and sister, Congresswoman Jennifer and Hero will be played by Diane Lane and Olivia Thirby. Diana Bang will be playing Dr Allison Mann who will work on cloning Yorick, while Ashley Romans will be Agent 335, Yorick’s bodyguard.

Much like the Y: The Last Man’s universe, the crew on-screen and off is predominantly women, including directors of all episodes.

Although the first trailer does not have any actual footage from the show, we expect to see more teaser photos and even a full-length trailer as the release date approaches.
