Microsoft and Xbox plan on releasing Xbox exclusives for PlayStation

Summary

  • As per recent industry insider information, Xbox and Microsoft plan on multiplatform releases later this year.
  • This includes Xbox Exclusives like Starfield, rumored to release on PlayStation 5.
  • Starfield’s PlayStation 5 release will arrive soon after the launch of The Shattered Space expansion pack.

Days of flexing PlayStation or Xbox exclusives seem to be coming to a draw now. Industry insiders might have something to say for all those who thought a massive title like Starfield would remain an Xbox Exclusive.

Gaming News Insider, XboxEra, has revealed Xbox and Microsoft’s plan to push for multiplatform releases, citing Starfield as one of the first few titles to be made available for both Xbox and PlayStation. Starfield is rumored to be released for PlayStation 5 soon after the upcoming DLC.

The upcoming DLC is targeted for PC and Xbox and is called the “The Shattered Space” expansion. This expansion is arriving later this year and remains unconfirmed as of now.

Microsoft has also reportedly made some additional investments into PlayStation 5 Dev kits. This strengthens the claims of multiplatform release.

Given Microsoft’s longstanding strategy to monopolize whatever field they are playing, this news is quite a surprise for most players across the globe.

This also means that there have been quite a few “fierce internal debates.” Starfield’s release on PlayStation 5 would go against Xbox’s President, Sarah Bond’s statement at Starfield’s showcase in 2021 where she said that Starfield was an exclusive.

However, it seems that their stance has changed in the three years that have ensued since. Microsoft’s take-over of Activision resulted in them being forced into agreeing to some fair-trade practices not to monopolize the gaming segment.

This seems to be an offshoot of a larger internal struggle to spread out to PlayStation consoles. Microsoft leadership has already weighed out the pros and cons of releasing their exclusive software elsewhere, and not everyone was happy with it.

However, the revenue it would generate seemed to outweigh their ego and choice to keep specific titles exclusive. According to particular sources, this could happen as soon as Q1 this year. It remains a matter of speculation until Microsoft officially confirms its future strategy for title releases, which is expected later this month.
