World War II Manga, Peleliu: Guernica of Paradise, Receives Anime and Spinoff Manga

Peleliu: Guernica of Paradise strips war of its fake glory and blatantly points out its evils. The new anime adaptation of the manga series will continue to make people aware of the blight on mankind’s history, World War II.

Tamaru dreams of being a mangaka, but he is dragged to war due to the enlistment program. He sees his friends being taken away from him one by one.

Some die due to bombings, and some die due to unforeseen circumstances. Slowly and steadily, the manga shows the real and ugly face of war.

Peleliu: Guernica of Paradise is getting adapted into an anime. The series will also receive a spinoff manga.

The spinoff manga is titled “Peleliu Gaiden. Young Animal.” The launch dates of both the anime and the spinoff manga have not been revealed yet.

Peleliu was nominated for the 25th Annual Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize this year. It also won an award at the 46th Japan Cartoonist Awards 2017.

It is a beautiful portrayal of the reality of war. The simplistic and peaceful artstyle stands in contrast to the plot and brings out the reality even more.

Peleliu, the name of the manga, is taken from the island of Peleliu. It is a beautiful coral island that carries proof of the bloody Battle of Peleliu.

It is here that 10,000 Japanese troops had to stand against the US army, which was five times its size.

Tamaru, the protagonist, will give us an account of his daily life while living there as a soldier. Some of the soldiers hope to win the war and go back alive.

However, the rest already know that there is no returning and only wish to fight before dying.

About Peleliu: Guernica of Paradise

Peleliu: Guernica of Paradise is a World War II manga by Kazuyoshi Takeda. It was launched in 2016 in the Young Animal magazine.

The story follows Tamaru, a Japanese soldier who is stationed at the island of Peleliu during World War II.  He had wanted to be a mangaka but he was enlisted as a soldier and does not know if he will be able to return alive.

He and his comrades face bombings by the US troops. The manga explores the wishes of the soldiers and what they are fighting for.
