Will there be a Barbie 2? What We Know So Far About a Potential Sequel

This weekend, Barbie gave us all valuable lessons on everything pink and feminist. In case you’ve missed it, there’s still time to head to your nearest theaters to get the much-needed crash course on what it is to be a woman in the present day.

But those of you who’ve already visited Barbieland must be wondering whether they’ll be returning there anytime soon.

1. Will there be Barbie 2?

As of writing this article, there is no official confirmation that Barbie 2 will be made. However, both Greta Gerwig and Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz have given positive statements about a potential sequel for Barbie.

On being asked about Barbie 2, director Greta Gerwig told People that she hopes her film begins “the launch of a world and a bunch of different Barbie movies.”

“There’s a tone, humor, and joy, and obviously, the world is so beautiful. I want to go back to Barbie Land.” – Greta Gerwig

In a conversation with TIME , the CEO of Mattel, Ynon Kreiz, also positively responded about the making of more Barbie movies. Here’s what he said-

“We’re looking to create movies that become cultural events. If you can excite filmmakers like Greta and Noah [Baumbauch, Barbie’s co-writer] to embrace the opportunity and have creative freedom, you can have a real impact.”

In contrast, Margot Robbie sounds a little less enthusiastic about a Barbie sequel. She seems to be suffering from PTSD from her brief stint in the DCEU. Wink! Here’s what she said:

“I think you fall into a bit of a trap if you try and set up a first movie whilst also planning for sequels. It could go a million different directions from this point.”

From the statements, it’s clear that discussions about another Barbie movie are going on. After the massive success of Barbie and its performance at the box office on its opening weekend, plans for a sequel do not seem alien at all.

But it is too early for official confirmations. Warner Bros Studios might consider waiting for Barbie to finish its theatrical run to better understand the film’s box office collection. Making a sequel also depends on multiple other factors, such as the availability of actors, a suitable director, box office prospects, and reviews.

If all of that goes well, we might get a sequel to Barbie.

2. Will Margot Robbie return for Barbie 2?

If Barbie 2 is made, Margot Robbie is not guaranteed to return as Barbie. In fact, several other Barbies in the film might lead to the second film in the franchise. I would love to see a spin-off of Weird Barbie or one of Doctor Barbie. Emma Mackey’s Barbie could also lead her own film.

The ending of Barbie very much cleared the fate of Margot Robbie’s character. So, it will be hard for her to return to Barbieland again. Ideally, a Barbie franchise film should be set in Barbie land, meaning the next film cannot be based on Stereotypical Barbie (Margot Robbie).

As of now, enjoy the first film in theaters. We’ll keep you updated about a potential sequel!

3. About Barbie (2023)

Barbie is a 2023 film directed by Greta Gerwig, who co-wrote the screenplay with Noah Baumbach. It is based on the eponymous fashion doll line by Mattel, and serves as the franchise’s first live-action film adaptation after several computer-animated direct-to-video and streaming television films.

The film stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken respectively. Barbie released in the United States and United Kingdom on July 21, 2023, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.
