Is Solos Getting A Second Season?

Here’s the thing: viewers don’t hate this show as much as  Rotten Tomatoes does. It’s really not that bad.

Amazon Prime’s sci-fi anthology ‘Solos’ is set in a post-pandemic world armed with some pretty fancy tech. The series explores the meaning of being human in short, seemingly unrelated episodes — until the grand finale drops the big bomb.

Now, I’ll admit, the last three episodes felt pretty bleak compared to the first four. And disappointing as that may be, it didn’t completely ruin the whole show. I genuinely enjoyed a lot of elements, and so did many others.

After binging the entire season in a day, though, I wondered if I could look forward to another season. Fast forward a few hours later, and here I am, answering that exact question for you.

1. Will There Be A Season Two Of Solos?

As of now, Amazon has not confirmed a second season for Solos. David Weil (creator of the show) is yet to make a public statement on whether the second season will be greenlighted or canceled, leaving us at the mercy of speculations.

Given director David Weil’s interest in doing a few more episodes, it’s not unreasonable to assume the second season might be renewed in the future. Weil also has a contract with Amazon Prime, which promises us his works on the platform for the coming years. Solos Season 2 might be part of these upcoming projects; who knows?

2. Is Solos Getting Cancelled?

However, there is a possibility that the show’s poor reception might lead to it being canceled after all. The critics were harsh on this one, with some calling the mini-series “a recap of Black Mirror’s most boring episodes,” — and that’s not even the worst thing anyone had to say.

To add to that, the pandemic situation might make it harder for producers to give another season a shot. Filming with A-List actors like Morgan Freeman and Anne Hathaway is especially hard during these times, and while the second season might not recast the same actors, they probably won’t settle for anything less than absolute stars.

Right now, most streaming platforms are focusing on animated series for their ‘pandemic-friendly’ production methods. The rest that are being shot are usually the top-performing series the platforms have to offer — like Netflix’s Lucifer, for example.

The point is, Solos has equal chances of being renewed or dropped. Nobody can be sure until we have word from the big producers at Amazon.

3. Is Solos Too Much Like Black Mirror?

Based on similar premises, Solo does have a striking resemblance to Black Mirror. Both shows are sci-fi anthologies exploring human experiences in a technologically advanced world. Some episodes go far enough with this ‘resemblance’ to feel like retellings of Black Mirror.

I mean, think about this: “our protagonist is trying to outsmart the AI in their smart house that’s plotting against them.” Was I describing Solos Episode 4 or Black Mirror Episode 7? You’ll never know.

Sure, the episodes do have their differences. But this sort of matching episode streak can hardly go unnoticed in two shows with practically the same premise.

Yet, this isn’t to cast Solos away as a pathetic copy of Black Mirror. I quite enjoyed the first few episodes (especially episode 4).

The resemblance doesn’t make Solos a lousy show. And for fans of Black Mirror, this resemblance might even prove to be a good thing! Give it a shot, you have nothing to lose.
