Suits Will Not Be Coming Back For Another Season: Here’s Why

The critically acclaimed legal drama series “Suits” finally came to an end after its nine-season run on September 25, 2019.

The creator of the show confirmed that its ninth season would also be its last one on January 23, 2019. He said that the series was coming to an end as a result of the expiry of all the actors’ contracts.

Suits is still one of the highest-grossing and most-viewed series on television and the most popular amongst legal dramas. Although it has a hyper-realistic representation of a corporate lawyer’s life, it has been praised for its witty writing, engaging storylines, and noteworthy performances by its lead actors.

It’s safe to say that all the characters in Suits get happy endings and they all go on to accomplish things they’ve always wanted to.

Now let’s dive into the details of how and why this beloved show got canceled.

SPOILERS AHEAD! This page contains spoilers from Suits.

Will there be a Season 10 of Suits?

No, there will not be a season 10 of Suits. As much as we’d all love to see more of Harvey Specter, all the plotlines in the series were concluded in its final episode and it doesn’t seem like there is much left to tell in the characters’ stories.

When Meghan Markle (Rachel Zane), now the Duchess of Sussex, had to leave after season 7 as she was marrying into The Royal Family, Patrick J Adams (Mike Ross) also announced that he would be exiting the show. He felt like there was nothing more to cover in Mike Ross’s life, with his secret about never going to Harvard already out of the bag and him also having served time in prison for it.

When the main couple of the show was no longer making appearances, it was clear that the series was going to end soon. This also became evident when the ratings for seasons 8 and 9 dropped. Although Adams came back as a guest star a few times, it didn’t seem too help much.

The fact that Suits made it to nine seasons is a big deal on its own. It made sense to end the show before it got dragged on for way too long and lost its charm.

Why was Suits canceled?

On January 23, 2019, the creator and writer of Suits, Aaron Korsh, confirmed that season 9 would be the last season. However, it was not canceled by USA Network; this decision was made before the first episode of the ninth season premiered.

“Suits has played an instrumental role in our network’s DNA for nearly a decade,” Chris McCumber, President of USA Network and SyFy, said when asked about ending the series. “I and everyone at USA Network sincerely thank Aaron Korsh, our partners at UCP, and the entire Suits family for their tremendous creativity, devotion, and support over a truly amazing run.”

Korsh explained that after season 7, the actors’ contracts were renegotiated to include a season 8 and 9 as well. Although Meghan Markle had to leave and Patrick J Adams also decided to exit, the rest of the actors agreed to come back for two more seasons.

When their contracts expired after season 9, there was no reason for anyone to return for another season.

In an interview, Aaron Korsh shared:

to the exceptional writers, cast and crew – thank you for your passion and devotion, without which, Suits would be nothing. And last but never least, to the fans who have stuck with the Suits family through thick and thin, through can-openers and flashbacks – thank you for always speaking your mind. Without you, I might start to think I’m getting the hang of this writing thing. And once that happens, nobody wins.

Back at the firm, all the senior partners, Donna, and Mike manage to take down Faye and get rid of her once and for all.

Harvey and Donna decide to leave the firm to settle down in Seattle where Mike and Rachel already are. Harvey makes plans to join the same legal clinic that Mike is working for.

The name of the law firm changes to Litt Wheeler Williams Bennett. Louis Litt becomes managing partner, Samantha Wheeler and Alex Williams are still senior partners with their names on the wall and Katrina Bennett finally gets the credit she deserves and becomes a senior partner as well.

The final scenes are Harvey and Donna saying tearful goodbyes to their colleagues who have by this point become like family. Harvey takes one last look at his office after which the soundtrack for the end credits plays for the final time.

Does Suits have a Spin-Off Series?

Yes, Suits does have a spin-off series called “Pearson”, starring Gina Torres reprising her role as Jessica Pearson after exiting Suits in season 6. The final episode of Suits season 7 acted as a backdoor pilot for the series which features Jessica navigating her way through Chicago politics after getting disbarred in New York City.

The series ran from July 17, 2019 to September 18, 2019 with just 10 episodes. Shortly after this first season ended, the show was canceled due to lack of viewership. Many felt that it just wasn’t as good as the parent series.

The legacy of this incredible show will never be forgotten. Don’t be disheartened that it’s over; you can still binge-watch all nine seasons of Suits on multiple streaming platforms.
