SPOILERS AHEAD! This page contains spoilers from Chicago Fire.

1. When will season 12 release?

As per the release schedules of the previous seasons, Chicago Fire season 12 should premiere between late September and early October 2023. However, due to the current WGA strike, production may be pushed to later this year and the episodes may be ready only by 2024.

For those unaware, the Writers Guild of America or WGA has gone on strike to demand better pay and benefits from the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. This strike has resulted in many TV series stopping production, which could soon include Chicago Fire.

Even if the script is partially complete, it’s unlikely that the cast and crew will start filming without the writers on set. It would also be inconvenient if any rewrites or changes need to be made in the script.

2. How many episodes will season 12 have?

Due to budget cuts at NBC, the creators of Chicago fire have been asked to reduce the number of episodes from the standard 22 to 18-20. Deadline also reported that the budget trimming would mean salary reductions for the cast members.

The cutback in episodes isn’t very large, but it could mean extra work for the writers to try and wrap up the storylines sooner.

3. What will the plot of season 12 be?

We still don’t have an official synopsis for season 12 but based on the finale of season 11, we can guess what will be covered next.

Season 12 of Chicago Fire will have to answer several questions like whether Brett will say yes to Casey’s proposal, whether Mouch will die after being shot and whether Kidd and Severide will reunite and be able to work out their issues.

The season 11 finale has us questioning how many characters will stay and how many will leave Firehouse 51. There are also other subplots like Brett’s journey with motherhood and the new love interests that were introduced at the end.

All in all, there’s a lot of drama to unpack and we can already tell the next season is going to be a messy one.

4. Which cast members will return?

Although no official cast list has been announced for Chicago Fire season 12 yet, most actors should return to reprise their roles.

The only ones in question are Taylor Kinney, Jesse Spencer and Christian Stolte because of how their respective characters’ storylines ended in season 11.

Taylor Kinney as Kelly Severide

Taylor Kinney, who plays Kelly Severide, did not appear in the last few episodes of season 11 because he had to deal with a personal matter. However, the finale didn’t confirm whether he would be returning or not.

Jesse Spencer, who plays Matthew Casey, only came back as a special guest star for season 11. But based on how Casey’s proposal to Brett goes, he could be promoted to a series regular again. Here’s what the actor told NBC Insider:

“The idea when I left the show was that if it was appropriate and it would work with the storyline they wanted to do, I would be open—and they would be open—to bringing Casey back. – Jesse Spencer

Christian Stolte’s return to Chicago Fire as Randall “Mouch” McHolland is also unclear because we still don’t know if his character survived his gunshot wound in the end.

As of now, this is everything we know about Chicago Fire’s next season. Until we get more news, you can go back and watch the first 11 seasons on NBC or Peacock.
