Marvel Studios’ Eternals is now available to stream on Disney+, and MCU fans have yet another reason to talk about the Chloé Zhao-directed film.
Besides being a visually stunning movie making the fans long for a sequel, the way, it ended left almost all the characters’ fates open for interpretation and future appearances. All but one – Ikaris.
By the end of the film, it is an unspoken fact that Ikaris is dead, and the viewer assumes there are no chances of him returning. However, that was until a new TikTok accidentally hinted at the superhero’s revival to the MCU.
TikTok user Emmy Kennard (@emmytriggerzzz) posted a video about her brother, Joe Kennard, revealing that he is set to play a returning MCU character. As Joe worked as a stunt double for Richard Madden, fans were quick to theorize the returning character was Ikaris.
Of course, the stunt double could be returning for another unrelated MCU project, but as he’s required to sign an NDA, exact details of the role can’t be revealed.
Eternals screenwriter Kaz Firpo told CBR back in November that Ikaris was gone for good,
I don’t think that Ikaris even thinks that he’s wrong. I think that he just has so much regret… So really, that act is basically saying, ‘I made a mistake, but I can’t face my family, and I can’t go on living.’ It really is a moment of saying, ‘It’s sacrifice.’ It’s sort of saying, ‘I can’t serve the Eternals. If I can’t serve the Celestials, and I can’t be with my family, then I choose this third option,’ which — for him — really is oblivion. So yeah, he dead.

However, this was back when the film was still being trashed by the critics. Over time, fans have loved Ikaris, mainly because it’s Madden, but also due to the character’s sacrifice and arc.
After basically screwing over his whole family of superheroes to dedicate himself to Arishem’s cause, Ikaris, in the final moments of the film, realizes his mistake. He feels bad for killing Ajak and for the whole chain of events that followed after, so he flies so close to the sun that it is assumed he has been burnt to a crisp.
In all probability, Ikaris could return but not as the one we are familiar with. He could end up being someone completely different if the Celestials remold him to be a useful and powerful tool. Maybe they’d tweak him up a bit, make some reparations, wipe his memory, and voila!
Ikaris, as a character, has a lot of potential and reviving him might not be totally out of the realm of possibilities.
