Netflix Has Renewed Ragnarok For A Third And Final Season

Rejoice! Netflix has renewed Ragnarok for a third season! But wait, it’s also going to be the final one.

The tale of Norse Gods reincarnated in modern times in the fictional Norwegian town of Edda has been one of Netflix’s surprising underdogs that gained a lot of popularity when the show’s season 2 dropped this May.

Naturally, fans of the show have been desperately waiting for the news about renewal from Netflix, and the company did not disappoint! Netflix Nordic posted a video on Instagram with some of the cast members announcing that the third and final season is happening.

Although fans were overjoyed by the news, they were equally devastated to find out the series would end with season 3. The video features four of the primary cast, but surprisingly David Stakston (Thor/Magne) was nowhere to be seen.

Cast

Ragnarok is led by David Stakston in the role of Magne Seier/Thor, with Jonas Strand Gravli as Laurits Seier/Loki, Herman Tømmeraas as Fjor, Theresa Frostad Eggesbø as Saxa Jutul, Bjørn Sundquist as Wotan Wagner/Odin, Danu Sunth as Iman Reza/Freyja, and Billie Barker as Signy.

All of these cast members can be expected to return with new additions if the showrunners decide to add more Norse Gods for the final battle, aka Ragnarok.

Plot

If you haven’t watched the show, it’s basically Skam-meets-Norse Mythology. Plus, you might recognize three of the main actors in the series from their Skam days.

However, if you’re like me and have binged both the seasons a gazillion times, you might already have some theories and expectations from the upcoming season.

Season 2 ended with a torturous cliffhanger with Laurits releasing his child, the Jörmungandr (Midgard Serpent) snake, into the lake so that it can grow into the god-killing weapon it’s destined to be.

Will the creature possibly be the one that kills Thor, just like the mythology? After all, it is the final season; you shouldn’t expect Magne to get away without a scratch.

While speaking to Digital Spy, Tømmeraas said that he hopes he gets to be the big bad of this season. As we last saw, Fjor was dead set on wanting to kill Magne in order to avenge Vidar’s death.

I hope— and this is just what I’m hoping. This is not how it is. I’ve always felt like the bad guys are the most interesting characters. I always think that the people that are evil are just the coolest thing – or the troubled characters who can’t really decide. So personally, I hope that I’m going to be able to become the devil in season three – if I can. Let me be brutal, and dark, and troubled, and sinister, please. Just let me go to the next level in season three.

Episode Count

Both the previous seasons of Ragnarok consisted of 6 episodes each. So there’s a possibility that that will be the case for the upcoming season too.

However, I can’t emphasize enough on it being the FINAL season. Not being too greedy, but here’s hoping it will have at least ten episodes and doesn’t rush the story’s pace.

Release Date

Due to Covid-related delays, the first two seasons had an 18-month gap. With season 3 being the final season, it wouldn’t be a surprise if it takes longer. If one had to guess, the final season can be expected sometime at the end of 2022.
