Fargo’s showrunner Noah Hawley has plans of ending the show in Season 5. The anthological series that was inspired by the 1996 Coen brothers’ film of the same name, has run its due course, according to Hawley. All that’s left for Season 5 to do is tie up some of its dangling strings.
Hawley sits down for an interview with Vanity Fair where he talks about Anthem, his upcoming novel to be released in January, 2022 as well as taking the reigns for the new FX show, Aliens.
With two big projects on his plate, Hawley’s schedule for Fargo does seem a little tight.
While the first three seasons acquired critical acclaim including Golden Globe nominations, the fourth season was well-received but without its usual ebullience.
When asked about what’s in store for Fargo Season 5, Hawley revealed that the new season was definitely in the works, but a solid foundation had not been laid yet. Here’s more:
I don’t have it yet. I have pieces that will have to survive. They’re not connected. I think it would be good to create an ending, and deliberately come to something, knowing it’s the last one and see how one might wrap up this anthology.

Hawley’s Fargo reads more like a collection of stories, each season neatly being contained within their own time period and location – of course, with the town of Fargo, North Dakota at its heart.
Each season also has a different cast, with prominent characters being played by Billy Bob Thornton, Allison Tolman, Martin Freeman (for Season 1), Kirsten Dunst, Patrick Wilson (for Season 2), and Ewan McGregor (for Season 3).
Hawley is no stranger to rounding up a show when it’s on a high, having done so for his X-men series Legion. Given Season 4’s hot-and-cold reception, it would then make sense to end Fargo in Season 5, while it is still blooming with its overall success.
Hawley expresses the same:
I certainly don’t want to overstay my welcome. I’m sure there are some people who think that four seasons are too many […] There’s a lot more that goes into it, and the bar is high, and I certainly have no desire to be the last guy at the dance going, “Oh, it’s still good.”

It is, of course, yet to be seen how exactly Hawley plans to do so. Although there are no details available, he did reveal that Fargo Season 5 may be set in the recent past of the show’s events.
We will only know more closer to the season’s premier. Of course, given Hawley’s current timeline, his return to Fargo might warrant us a wait.
