Is Billy Butcher the real villain in The Boys Season 3?

The Boys Season 3 was a much-awaited show in 2022. With the teasers and trailer hinting at a bloodier, nastier, and darker season, we couldn’t wait to see what was in store for us. One of the main plot points we were keen on was Billy Butcher and his superpowers.

In episode 3, he takes the Compound V24, which gives him powers for 24 hours. While the intent is to kill Homelander by any means necessary, what does it truly say about the character’s moral compass?

Billy is one of those protagonists who’s not always likable – Neither to the audience nor his team members. But we always know he is on the right side of this extremely convoluted battle between supes and non-supes.

However, in season 3, he’s walking on a thin line that differentiates the good and the evil. His taking V24 might just make him stumble to the wrong side, to the point of no return. So, everyone’s been wondering if Billy Butcher will become evil and will he be the real villain of The Boys season 3?

Billy Butcher might not be a complete villain, but he’ll most likely not be the hero he’s been so far. Compound V24 not only gave him powers but also amplified his negative traits.

V24 gave our protagonist uncontrollable powers, but along with them came some uncontrollable behavior. While there were many adverse effects such as bad stomach, puking, and more, Billy’s nature was more concerning.

After he injected himself with it, he started lying more; he pushed away Becca’s son, Ryan, by accusing him of killing her and seemed to care little about Kimiko. We all know that he’s been called a c*nt, an a**hole, and perhaps a few other things, and he’s not the nicest person to be around.

But something seems to be different this time. The loss of his wife Becca has made him more desperate than ever to kill Homelander, his biggest nemesis. In an effort to do that, Billy seems to be ready to go to any lengths, which can turn problematic.

If you’ve read the comics, you’ll know that even the boys fighting the supes had superpowers, and Billy, in the end, becomes the villain/antagonist in the most ironic way. He becomes what he hates the most, and while season 3 will explore this arc, I don’t think it’ll end with him being an utterly dark character.

One of the main reasons for this is the announcement of season 4. They’ll leave the most poetic and intriguing bits for the next season. Moreover, in the remaining 4 episodes, they’ll be dealing with numerous other arcs involving, Starlight, Homelander, Hughie, Victoria Neuman/Nadia, and Soldier Boy, among others.

So, Billy Butcher might turn into the darkest version of himself that we’ve seen so far, but if his destiny is to become a villain, it might not happen in this season. The Boys season 4, episode 5, releases on June 17 at 12:00 AM PT and 3:00 AM ET. Don’t miss it.

About The Boys

The Boys is an American satirical superhero streaming television series developed by Eric Kripke for Prime Video. Based on the comic book of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, which was originally published by DC Comics under their Wildstorm imprint before moving to Dynamite Entertainment, it follows the eponymous team of vigilantes as they combat superpowered individuals who abuse their abilities.

The show is a satirical take on the superhero genre and showcases a world where superheroes are corporatized and controlled by companies. What happens when these superheroes step out of line and rub some boys the wrong way, is the story.
