Avatar 5’s New Release Date Sets Daunting Task for James Cameron

Due to the WGA strike and other factors, Disney has changed the course of several projects under its banner, including MCU films, Star Wars projects, and the Avatar sequels. James Cameron’s upcoming instalments in the Avatar franchise were due every alternate year from 2024, but the revised dates set it back by quite a bit.

Avatar 3 will be pushed to a year after its original release date, now set to release on December 19, 2025, and the following sequels get another three years added to it. That puts Avatar 4’s release date on December 21, 2029, and Avatar 5’s premiere on December 19, 2031.

These delays have brought a serious question to the minds of the franchise’s fans – will James Cameron bid goodbye to his filmmaking career after Avatar 5? The elderly director may be a genius when it comes to sci-fi fiction, giving us the 2019 hit Avatar, followed by a sequel that only builds up on the previous one’s success.

While both films have claimed their place in the top three box office hits of all time, three more films spanning almost another decade will surely put a toll on the franchise director.

Cameron, 68, will almost be touching 80 by the time Avatar 5 hits theaters, and that too if no other big delays await the film in its future. It is commendable for a man to put in such demanding hours to make such ethereal films, and no one would blame Cameron for calling it quits after the 2031 film.

However, the Titanic director has long established that he does not intend to pack his bags and retire anytime soon after Avatar 5. In fact, he feels as if he is just in the right zone to keep creating more content for cinemagoers to enjoy as long as no one is complaining about the work he puts in.

Plus, Cameron is not the only filmmaker in the industry who will work well into his seventies and possibly his eighties as well. Martin Scorsese is still going strong despite having crossed the eighty mark, and other directors like Steven Spielberg and George Miller are still going strong despite being in their mid-seventies.

The technological advancements and time to refine the scripts for the upcoming sequels promise the sequels will outdo their predecessors.
