“Six seasons and a movie,” has finally turned into a reality! After the Community movie was announced on the official Twitter handle, a few of the cast members were also confirmed: Joel McHale, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, Jim Rash, and Ken Jeong.
Fans were quick to notice that Donald Glover was not included in this list. Why so?
Well, it has not been confirmed whether Donald Glover will be returning for the Community movie. The possible reasons for this could be his character being written off, Glover’s own scheduling issues, and/or the film’s budget constraints.
Glover has been tagged by his fellow castmates in several posts, so even with his “unconfirmed” status, there is a possibility that negotiations are underway as the film is in its very early stages.
(I also have a feeling that it’s possible that the film may want to keep Glover’s appearance a surprise).
Nonetheless, let’s discuss the reasons that could lead to him being absent from the film.
1. Glover Left Community in S5
Glover’s Troy was beyond loved for the four seasons that he appeared on the show. Post Season 4, Glover felt the need to step back and focus on his mental health. During his S5 exit, he explained the situation and shared his insecurities in an Instagram post (that has now been deleted).
The show kept the door open for his character and even offered Glover a way back in Season 6. Although there seems to be no bad blood between the two parties, Glover chose not to appear in the swan song season as well. It could just be that he preferred the way the story ended for his character.
2. Glover’s Scheduling Issues
After Community, Glover has gone on to star in several films and TV shows, and has even produced amazing musical hits. He has also co-created Atlanta, in which he was part of the main cast as well.
Although the show has only recently come to a close after four seasons, Glover already has another project lined up: Mr. and Mrs. Smith. So, it is possible that Glover may be absent from the Community film due to these prior bookings.
3. Community Film’s Budget
It’s no secret that since Community, Donald Glover has skyrocketed in the TV, film, and music industries. Apart from any scheduling issues that may arise, it’s possible that the Community film’s budget may not be able to accommodate Glover’s price point.
Still, it’s too early to say anything and there is still a possibility that Glover might make a small appearance in the form of a cameo. Right now, a lot of fans are campaigning for Glover’s return, and one must not underestimate the power of trending Twitter hashtags. Watch this space for more!
4. About Community
Community is an American television sitcom created by Dan Harmon. The series ran for 110 episodes over six seasons, with its first five seasons airing on NBC from September 17, 2009, to April 17, 2014, and its final season airing on Yahoo! Screen from March 17 to June 2, 2015.
Set at a community college in the fictional Colorado town of Greendale, the series stars an ensemble cast consisting of Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Yvette Nicole Brown, Alison Brie, Donald Glover, Ken Jeong, Chevy Chase, and Jim Rash. It makes heavy use of meta-humor and pop culture references, often paying homage to film and television clichés and tropes.
