The Real Reason Behind David Wanting to Keep Ellie Alive in The Last of Us E8

The most recent episode of The Last of Us gives Ellie the very thing she needs to get Joel back on his feet so that they can resume their mission, but her savior soon turns into her captor.

At the beginning of the episode, the viewers are introduced to David, a benevolent leader of a small community, a kind man offering Ellie medicine for Joel’s infected wound in exchange for a deer she hunted.

But as the episode progresses, his darker side becomes more prominent. In the guise of a messenger of God, David has formed his own cult and, unbeknownst to his followers, has been feeding them their dead all this time.

The cannibalism aside, David’s fatherly act quickly slips as he reveals he wants to hunt Joel down after the wounded man killed one of his own. But that he means no harm to Ellie, imprisoning her alive instead of sentencing her to Joel’s fate.

He explains that it’s because he sees something in her which is similar to him, that she has a violent heart. He even goes on to appreciate the Cordyceps monsters and how their violent tendencies and loyalties to their kind have kept him interested. He tells Ellie that she is a leader and she’d be better off by his side than Joel’s.

But by the end of the penultimate episode, David’s truly devious reason to keep the teen around comes to light. He wants to keep her as a trophy, as the one immune in a sea of people waiting to be infected.

And then, the show makes it clear why David really wanted Ellie alive and under his thumb, something the game had only hinted at. He makes a move on her and states that he likes it when someone puts up a fight as Ellie fights away from his sexual advances. Of course, she doesn’t need a daddy, especially a sicko like David, and she kills him with a cleaver.

David meets a bloody end, as he should’ve, and I’m almost sorry no one will be eating his gory pieces. But Joel and Ellie have a dangerous adventure ahead in the last episode, where they’ll need to escape David’s cult following his murder.

The Last of Us will be back with its season finale next Sunday on HBO Max.
