Doctor Strange 2 Main Villain Reveal Seems too Obvious to be True

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has a new synopsis revealing the film’s main villain, yet we can’t help but wonder if it’s all a misdirection.

The Doctor Strange sequel is still a month away, but there are already speculations about who the primary villain might be, with fans placing their bets on various Strange variants, Baron Mordo, and even The Scarlet Witch.

A new synopsis updated by SM Cinemas in The Philippines has revealed the film’s main villain to be Strange’s evil variant from the multiverse.

“Dr. Stephen Strange casts a forbidden spell that opens the door to the multiverse, including an alternate version of himself, whose threat to humanity is too great for the combined forces of Strange, Wong, and Wanda Maximoff.”

You might be wondering how someone could be a difficult opponent for Wanda, who’s more powerful than the Sorcerer Supreme himself. But mind you, if this version of Strange is similar to the one we saw in What If…? he’ll give them an excruciatingly hard time.

All in all, it seems pretty legit. But it’s the multiverse we’re talking about. Why would Marvel reveal such a big film’s “big bad” in its synopsis instead of keeping it a mystery?

The film’s trailer itself had so many new characters that anyone could end up being a villain, not to mention THAT dialogue by Wanda. And if the evil Strange variant really is too powerful to tackle, maybe there’s a stronger Scarlet Witch variant lurking around somewhere.

The different Strange variants, Professor X, the Illuminati, America Chavez, (possibly) Iron Man variant—you can never trust which variant is the bad apple.

As some fans theorize, the Strange that we saw in Spider-Man: No Way Home behaved a bit out of character and might possibly be the main villain. Although this one’s far-fetched, anything’s possible in the multiverse.

Another reason to be skeptical about this reveal is that previous Phase 4 titles have had trailers that lead one to believe a certain thing before revealing a completely different villain. For example, consider WandaVision with Agatha Harkness, Shang-Chi with Dweller-In-Darkness, and Eternals with the Celestials, among others.

Brazilian distribution platform Ingresso recently listed the film’s runtime to be 148 minutes (2 hours and 28 minutes), so there is no telling where the story would head.

It makes sense for the film to be longer than most MCU films, as it’ll deep dive into the multiverse as opposed to previous titles that barely scratched the surface.

Hopefully, all of our multiversal questions will be answered when Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits theatres on May 6, 2022.
