Fushi’s Arch-Nemesis: Who Is the Main Villain in To Your Eternity?

To Your Eternity threw me for a loop when I first started watching – I mean, a story with a tiny rock as the main character? But let me tell you; it didn’t take long for me to get emotionally invested.

Nothing in this anime is entirely black and white; the same goes for its villains.

To Your Eternity does not have a traditional “main villain.” Characters such as Hayase and the Nokkers pose challenges to Fushi’s growth and development, but their actions and motivations are complex and can’t always be labeled as good or evil.

Instead of focusing on a traditional hero-villain dynamic, it delves into the complexities of life and presents multifaceted characters with their own struggles. Don’t let the rock thing throw you off – this anime is excellent.

1. Who are Fushi’s biggest enemies?

This show follows the journey of Fushi, an immortal being who meets many fascinating characters along the way. And let me tell you; they are anything but one-dimensional.

They represent different aspects of human nature, like fear, jealousy, and grief, that we all experience.

Hayase and the Nokkers have been the most persistent adversaries of Fushi throughout his journey. Nokkers pose a significant threat to Fushi’s existence, and Hayase uses a variety of tactics to try to gain control over him.

Let’s dive into more detail about these characters and their role in the series.

2. Nokkers: Fushi’s Fiercest Foes

They were created to stop Fushi from preserving the world, hence their name “Nokkers,” which means they “Knock on the doors of paradise, seeking its destruction.” At first, they want to kill Fushi and cause chaos, but there’s more to them than that.

The Nokkers view Fushi as their arch-enemy because they believe that the Beholder and Fushi are responsible for causing people unnecessary pain. In their eyes, taking people’s souls and bringing them to Heaven saves them from suffering.

There also exist humans who have been transformed into Nokkers. These creatures are dangerous because they retain their memories and personalities from when they were humans. The major ones are as follows –

3. Hayase’s Nokker –

At first, this creature was trying to take control of Hayase’s body, but she managed to get rid of it.

The Nokker followed Hayase onto the boat that Fushi left her on in the middle of the ocean. It attached itself to Hayase’s arm and has been with her descendants ever since.

What’s fascinating about this Nokker is that because of its symbiotic relationship with Hayase’s family, it came to understand why humans want to live.

When Pocoa asked why it didn’t leave Kahaku and return to where it came from, the creature expressed fear of dying and losing everything it had acquired, which would betray the Nokkers’ logic.

4. Izumi’s Nokker –

The Nokker’s mission was just to replace Izumi and be a good mother to Mizuha in her place. But as time passed, she started to feel genuine affection for the family.

It was heartwarming to see her ask Mizuha to go home so Fushi wouldn’t hurt her. And when her husband committed suicide, she was upset and admitted she loved him.

After his death, the Nokker fell into a pit and saw Mizuha fall and die beside her. At that point, the Nokker lost the will to live and decided to die there instead of healing her injuries.

5. Mimori’s Nokker –

The Nokker that took over Mimori’s body was one of the most sinister ones in the series. It seemed to relish in causing pain and destruction and didn’t care who got hurt.

At first, you think it’s just a harmless little girl, but then you realize this Nokker is pure evil! It was pretty terrifying to watch it fight Fushi because you could see just how much it enjoyed the violence.

It was a stark contrast to the sweet and gentle Mimori we had grown to love, showing how dangerous the Nokkers can be.

6. Funa’s Nokker –

While Funa’s Nokker claims to want coexistence with Fushi and humanity, it’s hard to justify it removing Funa’s spirit from her body and attacking The Beholder.

However, she does have a point when she calls out Funa’s friends for going too far with their bullying of Mizuha.

Unfortunately, Funa’s Nokker isn’t above using human hostages to save her own skin, as she used one of Sumika’s kids as a human shield.

7. Hayase: The Creepy Fanatic Who Just Can’t Let Go

She was a government official from Yanome. Her obsession with Fushi was so intense that even after she died at sixty-two, her twisted legacy and fascination with Fushi continued to endure in pretty creepy ways.

Hayase’s influence has continued to affect people long after her death. Her restless spirit merged with a Nokker that keeps getting reborn in her descendants.

The Nokker starts with her nine-year-old granddaughter, then goes to her great-great-granddaughter, and even to her teenage great-great-great-great grandson!
