The Mystery Behind the Board in Severance

The Board in the Severance series seems to be these enigmatic figures who have not yet appeared on the show physically. They are above employees such as Milchick and Harmony and perhaps are at the top of the hierarchy.

We’ve barely heard from them, and with each episode, the mystery around their role in the organization is has been increasing. They usually get involved every time an employee mishap occurs.

So what exactly is the Board, and who all are part of it?

The Board is likely a group of members who run the Lumon organization. Kier was the first CEO of Lumon, who served from 1865 to 1939 and then died. However, he is likely still alive in some form and is leading the company’s board.

The Board appeared on a couple of occasions. The first one was when Harmony and Mark had to give an update about Helly’s mishap in the office. The second one was to talk about Petey.

Petey was an ex-employee who reintegrated his memory and wanted to expose Lumon and its dirty work. However, he died due to a side effect caused by the reintegration process. Harmony suspected this and brought it up in front of the Board.

However, the Board denied the existence of any such process. They mentioned how reintegration was impossible, and Harmony shouldn’t get any such ideas. They, in turn, reprimanded her for the macro data refinement numbers being low and asked her to focus on that instead.

Overall, the Board seems to be quite set in their ways and have a presence that symbolizes monarchy. All the formalities such as meetings and ‘conversations’ are merely the corporate terms used. In reality, they want to pass on instructions or commands that everyone below them must be following.

It is revealed in episode 3 that Kier Eagan is dead. However, likely, he might still run the Board and the company. This could be in many ways, but I believe it is because of his preserved consciousness which hasn’t yet completely developed into a full-fledged human.

This could also be why the Board never really speaks and only communicates with a representative present in Harmony’s office. Whatever the mystery behind the Board may be, it will soon be revealed in the upcoming episodes, along with all the dirty work happening at Lumon.
