Who was Ptolemy about to kill in the opening sequence?

The first few minutes of the first episode of Apple TV+’s new series The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey raises several questions in our heads about what is coming up. The series began with the introduction of Ptolemy Grey, an old man with dementia who is leaving a message for Robyn.

In the message, he apologizes for what he is “about to do.” There is a rap at the door which indicates that something big is about to happen and Ptolemy seems to be preparing to kill someone.

The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey is based on Walter Mosley’s novel of the same name. According to the novel, Ptolemy eventually ends up catching the killer of Reggie aka his beloved nephew, and also manages to kill the murderer.

If we consider that the show will mainly follow the storyline of the novel, it could be that Ptolemy was about to kill either a cop because he was about to get arrested, or himself since he had now caught Reggie’s killer.

Is Ptolemy about the kill a cop?

The opening sequence of Episode 1 of the series takes place after Ptolemy catches his nephew’s killer. We are actually hearing how all of this happened in the form of a flashback.

In that sense, Ptolemy has already killed Reggie’s killer. Thus, there are high chances that the police were coming to arrest him, which is why there were knocks on the door in the opening scene.

Ptolemy is most likely afraid of being arrested, which is why he is preparing to kill the police officers or simply doing it out of compulsion because he has no other option.

Is Ptolemy about to kill himself?

Ptolemy Grey definitely has mental health issues, which makes this option a much more probable one. He probably wants to escape the police and any other further trouble, so he might be preparing to kill himself.

Besides, Ptolemy only wanted to punish Reggie’s killer and if we consider that he has already achieved it when the opening sequence takes place, then Ptolemy getting ready to kill himself makes sense as he probably has no more will left to live.

At his age, Reggie was the only solace he had and his death hit him badly and made him more determined to find the killer. If he has already achieved that goal, he may not want to live anymore because Reggie would never come back, whether the killer is punished or not.

Ptolemy Might Want to Kill People Related to Reggie’s Death

Another probability is that Ptolemy is about to kill someone associated with Reggie’s death who may be after him. Maybe the knocks on the door were coming from someone related to Reggie’s death, or close to his killer who might wish to take revenge on Ptolemy.

In that case, Ptolemy apologizing to Robyn on call makes sense if the killer was someone unexpected or related to Ptolemy and Reggie. Maybe Ptolemy wished to convey that he had no other choice and had to do it.

We will probably only find out at the end of Season 1 what the knocks were all about. Till then, all we can do is wait.
