We were introduced to the term Irregular since the beginning of the series. Baam, the protagonist of this series, is an Irregular. He was able to control Shinsu freely without having a contract with the administrator.
In the first few chapters, Baam was told by Lero Ro that Irregulars were feared and brought significant change to the Tower. The question that arises is, why? What makes Irregulars so unique or different from the others?
1. Who are the Irregulars in Tower of God?
An Unchosen Irregular, more commonly known as an Irregular, is someone who was not selected from within the Middle and Outer sections to climb the Tower but instead entered the Tower from outside. Some known Irregulars are Baam, Rachel, Urek Mazino, Enryu, and Phantaminum.
Most known Irregulars have shown exceptional power from the moment they entered the Tower. Because of these factors, they have always brought significant change and chaos into the Tower.
2. Why are Irregulars feared?
Politically, Irregulars are viewed as beings who have entered the Tower without being chosen by Headon. Alumik Edrok mentioned that the Tower opens its gates to Irregulars, depending on what it needs.
Since they opened the doors themselves, their will goes against the Tower’s Laws. It has been confirmed that Irregulars have the power and authority to control Shinsu, i.e., the lifeline of the Tower, without the need for the Guardian’s approval.
Only Irregulars can receive challenges directly from the Guardians. The most important thing about an Irregular is that they are free of all the Tower’s contracts.
Most importantly, this means that they are capable of killing Jahad, who has a contract with the Guardians that guarantees that the inhabitants of the Tower can never kill him.
Most known Irregulars have shown exceptional power from the moment they entered the Tower. Because of these factors, they have always brought significant change and chaos into the Tower and is why they are feared.
3. Can only Irregulars reach the top?
The current testing system, in which Headon selects regulars, was likely established by Jahad after he conquered the Tower up to the 134th Floor.
Since only Irregulars can request to be tested directly by the Guardians, only an Irregular or those travelling with an Irregular can reach the top of the Tower. This implies that the original purpose of the Tower may have been solely to test those now known as Irregulars.
4. Is Baam an Irregular?
Baam is an Irregular and the main protagonist of the Tower of God. Baam entered the Tower search of his best friend Rachel, another Irregular, who wanted to climb to the top of the Tower and see the stars.
Since he opened the gate to the Tower himself, he became an Irregular.
5. Is Rachel an Irregular?
For a long time, there was a widespread debate in the fanbase over whether or not Rachel qualified as an Irregular, stemming from the unusual way Headon addressed her in Chapter 76 – the fact that Headon specifically said that she was “not chosen.”
SIU finally confirmed in a live chat with fans that Rachel indeed was an Irregular.
6. Who is Enryu?
Enryu is an Irregular and one of the most mysterious characters in the Tower. Currently, Enryu’s whereabouts are unknown, and no-one knows what he is doing.
Enryu entered the Tower during Zahard’s rule. His most impressive achievement was slaying the Guardian of the 43rd Floor. Before this feat of his, it was initially thought that guardians were immortal.
Before this feat, Zahard was #1 in Ranking by then, although his inactivity led to him being pushed down to a 2nd place by Enryu, who took over the 1st place at the time because of this.
However, he was later pushed down to the 2nd place because of Phantaminum.
7. Who is Phantaminum? Is he an Irregular?
Phantaminum is a mysterious and highly dangerous Irregular, currently 1st in the Ranking. He is famous for contributing to the creation of the stereotype against Irregulars. He is presumably the most powerful entity in the Tower and is an Axis.
Phantaminum appeared suddenly in the Tower and broke into the Zahard’s inner palace, killing many royals and courtiers, all of whom were high-level Rankers. He succeeded in breaking all of the lines of defence and ultimately faced Zahard, but he disappeared without a fight.
8. Who is Urek Mazino? Is he an Irregular?
Urek Mazino is an Irregular, currently 4th in Rank. He was the strongest active Ranker before Zahard became active once again. He is also the most recent person to be part of the Top 5 High Rankers inside the Tower.
He is considered to be on the same level as Phantaminum by weaker Rankers. However, his exact rank is almost impossible to determine in terms of the Top 4 positions because the top 2 Rankers are inactive.
He mentioned to Baam on the 43rd Floor that they would meet again later on the 77th Floor, then left the Floor. His current location is unknown.
It took Urek only 50 years to pass every test and climb to the top of the Tower. He is recorded as the fastest person to climb the Inner Tower through an orthodox method, and it would probably be accurate to say he scaled the Tower faster than Zahard himself.
During his climb, Urek took Arie Hon’s special test on the 100th Floor; the task was for Urek to endure his attacks for 10 minutes, but Urek fought evenly and passed Arie Hon’s special test causing him to become the most famous Ranker in the Tower as a result.
After becoming a Ranker, Urek used his reward from the test and took control of the 77th Floor; he then transferred the control again to Baek Ryun, who set up the stronghold of the Wolhaiksong there.
