The Xbox Games Showcase 2023 had a lot of amazing reveals and announcements, and Payday 3 was one of them. Starbreeze Studios and Overkill Software are set to bring their critically acclaimed first-person heist series back with the third installment.
Payday 3, the highly anticipated sequel to one of the most popular co-op heist shooters ever, is set to release this year on September 21. The release date and gameplay were officially revealed at the Xbox Games Showcase 2023.
The gameplay trailer wasn’t the only thing revealed at the Xbox Games Showcase, as tons of details about the game dropped right after. Here’s everything you need to know about the adrenaline-fueled upcoming shooter:
I. What is the story of Payday 3 about?
Payday 3’s story takes place several years after the events of its predecessors according to its official Steam page. Players will once again step into the shoes of the legendary Payday Gang as they wreak havoc in New York City.
After the events of Payday 2, the Crew left their life of crime behind and retired for good. But when a new threat, born from the chaos that they left in their wake, arrives, they’re forced out of their early retirement to rejoin the criminal world and step into the life that they once belonged to.
II. How will gameplay work in Payday 3?
Payday 3’s gameplay will be similar to its predecessors, but there’ll be a number of improvements, like upgraded skills and weapons, enhanced gunplay, and new additions like the dark web and cryptocurrency.
The core gameplay still retains the fast-paced and adrenaline-fueled mechanics from the previous Payday games, but lots of new improvements and new additions like sliding, etc. will add more depth and variety to the game. Players will now also be able to negotiate with police over hostages.
III. Will Payday 3 feature the original Gang?
Not every heister will be returning from Payday 2, but the original Payday Gang will be returning for Payday 3, consisting of:
- Dallas,
- Chains,
- Wolf, and
- Hoxton
In addition to that, according to the Payday 3 FAQ, Simon Kerr, Pete Gold, and Damion Poitier will be reprising their roles as Dallas, Hoxton, and Chains, respectively. Nicklas Berglund will be voicing Wolf, replacing Ulf Andersson.

IV. Which platform is Payday 3 releasing on?
Payday 3 is set to release this year on September 21 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Xbox players that have a Game Pass subscription will be able to play it day one on the platform.
The release date was revealed along with the trailer at the Xbox Games Showcase 2023 of Summer Game Fest. The game is now available for pre-order on all platforms.

VI. Will Payday 3 have crossplay and cross-progression?
The Payday 3 FAQ confirmed that the game will have crossplay and cross-progression available at launch. That isn’t surprising considering almost all online games nowadays have them at launch.
The FAQ reads, “PAYDAY 3 supports crossplay with all supported platforms, which means that you can play with your friends no matter where they prefer to play. You will also be able to avail of cross-progression, so you can heist from your preferred platform at any time.”
VII. Will Payday 3 have microtransactions?
Payday 3 will indeed have microtransactions only for cosmetics, which will not affect gameplay. This information was revealed in the FAQ on the game’s official website.
The FAQ reads, “Yes, you can buy PAYDAY Credits separately, however these are only for purchasing additional cosmetic items. These will not affect the gameplay. The PAYDAY Credits will be added post launch.”
