Jeanne du Barry’s premiere at Cannes Film Festival earned Johnny Depp, who plays one of the main characters in the film, a seven-minute standing ovation. Cannes director Thierry Fremaux also praised the film and Depp’s performance.

According to Collider, when asked about the selection of the opener for the 76th edition of the Cannes Festival, Fremaux said that it was because it’s a “beautiful film” and that “Johnny Depp is magnificent in it.”

Madame du Barry in John du Barry

Jeanne du Barry is a dramatized biopic of King Louis XV, the last king of France before the French Revolution. The movie covers his failings as a monarch and his romance with Madame De Barry, his favorite mistress.

King Louis XV was known for his corrupt rule that brought the empire to financial ruin and for his many mistresses. The film follows Jeanne du Barry, a low-born French woman who ends up as the King’s favorite mistress as she climbs the social ladder with her wit and charm.

Unaware of her being a courtesan, the King finds a new purpose for living with her. She moves into his Versailles palace, creating much controversy and scandal among the King’s family and court.

Due to her rebellious spirit, De Barry tries to change things around her and showcases it with the way she dresses and acts. She is book-read and philosophical, making her more intelligent than most, including the King. Of all the King’s mistresses, she is the one who was able to turn things upside down.

The movie’s trailer hints at much more and we must wait to witness it all. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for a quick release of the film in the US!
