What is Robyn’s true motive? Is she swindling Ptolemy Grey?

Ptolemy and Robyn make for an odd but endearing pair. After Reggie, Robyn seems like the child/grandchild he never had. What’s even better is that Robyn’s feelings towards Ptolemy seem to be genuine as well, as she goes out of her way to help him even when his family has abandoned him.

But in Episodes 3 and 4, it is insinuated that Robyn may have ulterior motives. Is that really true?

Robyn does not have any intentions of swindling Ptolemy Grey and is, in fact, wary of the wealth he has. She helps him out of the goodness of her heart and because she finds him to be a reliable person.

Living in a dog-eat-dog world makes it easy to question Robyn’s motives since it’s clearly depicted that she has no financial standing of her own, including a place to stay. It’s also why we may try to read into her selfless actions.

But it doesn’t take you more than a minute to discern how earnest her relationship with Ptolemy is. While there are many reasons she might resonate with him, the most obvious one is that he too, like her, is a decent person who has been discarded by his family by choice or by circumstance.

There’s only one swindler in this show and his name is Hilly. He has been up to no good since his first appearance, stealing Ptolemy’s cashed cheques with no shame.

If that wasn’t enough, in Episode 3, he planted a seed of doubt in Niecie’s mind about Robyn’s “intentions” of helping Ptolemy, reasoning that if anyone is to inherit Ptolemy’s wealth it should be them, not Robyn.

They go as far as calling the police on Robyn (in Episode 4) with the complaint that the young girl has been swindling their great-uncle (whom they’ve never taken care of prior to this) and even try to get social services to keep Ptolemy in an old-age home.

I felt in my bones that when Ptolemy and Robyn go to confront the mother-son duo, Niecie calls Robyn a “stranger” despite the girl cleaning her house, making their meals, and taking care of the kids like her own siblings. Guess money does make strangers out of even the most loved ones.

Now that Ptolemy knows of Hilly’s motives and deduced that the rest of his uncaring family may behave in the same way, he’s legally left Robyn in charge of the money that will be monthly given out to his family. Ptolemy still cares enough to take care of them in whatever financial way he can, but he’s no fool to leave them to their own devices.

This move will surely not sit well with Hilly and Niecie, but I really hope they don’t try any other tactics that will harm Ptolemy or Robyn. Episode 5 of The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey will air on April 1.
