True Detective S4E3: The Secrets of Navarro’s Family and the Tsalal Facility

True Detective: Night County episode 3 ends with Navarro’s past being connected to her present, leaving us with several questions about her backstory.

In the final moments, episode 3 indicates that the researchers died way before they froze. Moreover, it is hinted that Oliver had nothing to do with their deaths like Danvers expected, as he didn’t even know about them until Navarro spoke to him.

After meeting with Oliver, Navarro and Danvers go to the hospital to find out about Anders Lund’s failing health. Anders cannot talk, but he tells them some important details about the researchers and what happened to him that night. He also gives Navarro a cryptic message in Danvers’ absence.

1. Anders Lund’s Cryptic Message to Navarro Explained

When Danvers asks Lund what happened to him and his fellow researchers, Lund goes into a trance. He says, “She woke up.” He also speaks about how ‘she’ came for them in the dark without revealing who he is talking about.

Anders’ last words to Danvers are similar to Raymond Clark’s words in episode 1: “She’s awake.” Anders could be talking about Annie waking up from her deathbed to avenge those who wronged her. However, how she returned from death after six years remains to be seen.

It could have something to do with the Tsalal researchers’ experiments. The scientists were trying to put together the DNA of a now-extinct species to prevent cellular decay. Moreover, episode 2 revealed that Raymond had created a straw doll of Annie as he could not cope with her death.

Therefore, Raymond may have used some ancient organism DNA to revive Annie. However, his plan backfired, and he ended up creating his own monster dealing who’s now out to seek justice.

2. Was Anders Lund Possessed?

Anders Lund delivers Navarro a message suggesting that her mother is waiting for her. He does so while being in immense pain, suggesting that another entity possessed him for a while.

Lund did not know anything about Navarro or her mother, so his delivering the message at such a critical juncture indicates he was not himself. In a previous episode, Rose mentioned that Ennis is the point where the fabric separating the dead and the living is crumbling.

Since Anders was nearing his death, he had almost reached that point in Ennis. Therefore, Navarro’s mother could reach Anders and deliver a message to her daughter.

3. What happened to Navarro’s mother?

Navarro’s mother left their home without notice and never returned. She was later found dead, without any information about who killed her.

Navarro mentions that her father harassed her mother, and to protect herself and her kids, she left her father. However, her mental health worsened, leading her to leave her children, too. Navarro’s mother’s fate compelled Navarro to join the police force.

She is obsessed with solving Annie’s case for the same reason, as she believes if she can get to the bottom of it, she will be able to give justice to victims like her mother.

The message Navarro’s mother seemingly sent to her daughter implies that Navarro will never find peace until she can come to terms with her mother’s death.
