Apple TV+ is airing “Pachinko” (season 2) episode 4. The series’ third episode followed Sunja and her family after they left Osaka because of a bomb threat. They moved to a farm and adapted to their new circumstances quite quickly.
Hansu started presenting them with presents. He was, Sunja believed, reaching out to Noa and her family. She advised Noa to keep Isak in his memories at all times. Mozasu observed that certain eggs were consistently missing from their produce. To find the guilty party—Noa’s Japanese classmate—Chang-ho conducted investigations. Noa is kind to the child even though he was teased at school.
In 1989, Solomon presented Tom Andrews with a fresh business idea. The fourth episode of “Pachinko” (season 2) now centers on Hansu, who treats Sunja to a delightful surprise. With Kyunghee, Chang-ho aspires to begin a new life. Solomon gets closer to Naomi and completes his land deal.
Pachinko (Season 2) Episode 4 “Chapter Twelve” Recap:
1) Sunja Gets to See Her Mother Again
After years apart, Sunja is reunited with her mother, Yangjin, in one of the most poignant moments of episode 4. Even though Sunja and her mother didn’t always agree, they were very much in love, and the distance and time they spent apart—especially during the war—caused them to cry when they were finally reunited.
Hansu drives Yangjin to her daughter’s new residence in the rice fields as the reunion occurs. Hansu has repeatedly gone above and beyond to make Sunja happy despite being unable to save Isak.
Yangjin shares stories about her life with her grandsons at the dinner table as she gets to know them. Hansu interrupts the party as the food is being served and requests to be allowed to join them. Hansu wants to be with Sunja and Noa even though he is not interested in eating anything.
Yangjin gets an idea from this conversation and the fact that Sunja goes for a walk in the middle of the night. When Sunja gets back home, Yangjin not only tells her daughter to be careful around Hansu, but she also makes the accurate assumption that Noa’s biological father is the family’s wealthy savior.
2) Elder Sunja & Naomi Get Close Through Food & Their History:
Sunja visits Solomon in an alternate timeline after her grandson ignores her calls. She tells Solomon about her dream about him, prompting her visit. Solomon also sees Naomi, his former coworker. When Sunja offers to cook them a meal, their plans change.
Naomi helps Sunja in the kitchen while Solomon answers a call, allowing the two women to get to know one another. Naomi describes how her mother did her best to support the family despite her father’s constant absence, making her upbringing challenging.
Naomi specifically recalls her mother’s amazing cooking. Sunja can connect to all of these revelations. Sunja said she provided for her family for a considerable amount of time by cooking. Despite how much the world has changed, Sunja recognizes herself in Naomi’s stories.
3) Sunja Finds Out About Solomon’s Deal:
Sunja learns from Naomi in the kitchen that Solomon’s conviction in standing up for his beliefs attracted the young woman to him. Solomon aided Han Geum-ja in rejecting an agreement that would have taken her land, which made Naomi feel “empowered.” Han Geum-ja is rumored to have had a change of heart, implying that Schiffley will purchase the property. Sunja remains silent but wants to share something with Solomon.
When Solomon takes Sunja to her accommodation after supper, she asks her grandson more questions about the arrangement. Solomon insists that Han Geum-ja will make a substantial profit from the sale and that she decided on her own. Sunja warns her grandson not to get involved in any schemes he might be planning and reminds him, “Do not forget who you are,” just as her mother did years ago in the rice fields.
Sunja decided to take a walk after supper and encountered Hansu driving around. She thanked him for bringing her mother home, and despite his dismissive response, she insisted that everything he had done was incredibly kind and significant. After some hesitation, Sunja agreed to try driving Hansu’s car.
Sunja and Hansu get stuck in a muddy field after Sunja tries to drive. They pull the car out together, but their intimate moment is interrupted. Hansu reassures Sunja, but she realizes reconnecting with him is difficult. Sunja’s heart still belongs to Isak, and despite Hansu’s upset cries, she quickly departs.
5) Hansu Outscores The Foreman, and Noa Sees:
Noa and his new friend sneak out to see a beautiful field of fireflies after Sunja leaves for her walk. Noa’s life has been tough after moving, especially since Isak passed away. Hansu’s frequent appearances don’t help either. Despite later discovering a darker side to his biological father, it might have been nice to share a meal with the wealthy stranger.
Noa hides in the bramble and witnesses Hansu threatening the rice field foreman. The conversation implies that the Foreman is working on a project behind Hansu’s back, but it doesn’t clarify the plan’s specifics. After that, Hansu beats the Foreman to a bloody pulp and throws him to the ground.
Hansu sees Noa fleeing the scene just as he’s about to recover from his blind rage. Sunja’s decision not to pursue a romantic relationship with Hansu has released his anger, even though Hansu had been searching for the Foreman before their encounter.
Pachinko (Season 2) Episode 4 “Chapter Twelve” Ending Explained:
1) Kyunghee makes an important decision about her future:
Noa goes out with his new Japanese friend to catch fireflies, while Sunja accidentally causes a car crash. Noa and his friend share a passionate kiss but stop when they think someone is nearby. Although Noa feels they shouldn’t be afraid of being in a relationship, Sunja is still devoted to Isak and doesn’t want to be with him despite his help.
Sunja’s mother discovers that Hansu is Noa’s father and instructs Sunja not to reveal this to Noa. After Sunja rejects Hansu, he violently attacks a Japanese neighbor in front of Noa. Noa flees, and the family later participates in a customary ritual.
Their rice shed suddenly starts burning at night, causing Kyunghee to realize all their hard work was for nothing. The shed is engulfed in flames even though Sunja, Kyunghee, Mr. Kim, and the rest of the family rush to the scene. It takes only a few minutes to ruin all of their laborious efforts.
Chang-ho comforts her, believing they should make the most of their time on Earth, especially in light of potential American attacks. He kissed Kyunghee to mark the start of their relationship during that intense moment.
