House of the Dragon returned this Sunday after six years (not literally) since the events of episode 7. The Lord of the Tides title’s succession is hastened after Lord Corlys takes ill with his life hanging by a thread.
Lucerys Velaryon gets the title and is betrothed to Rhaena, Lord Vaemond loses his head (literally), Aemond strikes a fight between the House of the Dragon children, and Viserys breathes his last. All in all, episode 8 of House of the Dragon gave fans an hour packed full of drama.
But one detail fans have harped on amid the dramatic ending of episode 8 is Helaena’s prophecy. Alicent’s only daughter, Helaena Targaryen, has made several seemingly nonsensical ramblings since her introduction in episode 7.
But when her comment about Aemond losing an eye came true, fans verified her ramblings as prophecies and admitted that Helaena possesses The Eye.
Helaena makes another strange warning during the dinner scene in episode 8. “Beware the beast beneath the boards,” says the young princess. But what could she mean? We have some theories!
The most apparent connection to the word “beast” is a dragon. Since Driftwood (“the boards”) will pass to Lucerys Velaryon, a dragonrider, as pointed out by the council lords, we can deduce that Alicent’s children must be wary of their nephew.
Some fans have speculated that this prophecy will come to fruition much later in the years of Fire and Blood. Blood and Cheese, a horrific bookmark in the tale of Helaena Targaryen, marks the night when one of her children is sacrificed to the beastly men who snoop into the castle.
But do you want to hear our most probable and more compelling theory? Well, read on!
Daemon’s ex-wife, the only one alive, makes an appearance near the end of episode 8. Mysaria, who has been growing her network of spies and informants since her last appearance on the show in episode 5, finally shows her face in episode 8.
In the books, Mysaria, also known as White Worm, is a valuable asset to the Blacks against the Greens. This “beast” in Helaena’s story obviously moves in the shadows, away from the purview of any lookouts, just like Mysaria does with her whispers.
Since Mysaria possess a secret and poses threat to the Greens in the future, and how she is already keeping an eye out with Talya’s help in the castle, Helaena’s prophecy could very well point to the White Worm.
And we don’t think it’s a coincidence that Mysaria came back in episode 8 right after the dinner scene where Helaena whispered her prophecy to no one.
