Mission: Impossible 8 Unaffected by WGA Strike, Contrary to Earlier Claims

The ongoing Writers Guild of America strike has not disrupted the filming of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two, despite previous claims. The spy thriller, which is nearing 40 percent completion, is scheduled to release in June 2024.

According to Deadline, the Writers Guild of America strike has not impacted Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two. The production of the action-packed sequel is temporarily paused, but this is due to director Christopher McQuarrie and star Tom Cruise’s promotional activities for Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, which is set to release on July 12. The filming of the eighth installment will resume later in the summer.

While Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two can proceed with the filming of the possible final chapter in the spy saga, many other productions have been affected by the ongoing negotiations.

The second season of Star Wars’ Andor, Showtime’s Yellowjackets season 3, ABC’s acclaimed workplace comedy Abbott Elementary, and the final season of Stranger Things have all been put on hold due to the strike. Live broadcast programs, such as late-night talk shows, have also stopped production as their writers have ceased work.

Some shows that have finished their scripts before the WGA initiated the strike will be able to carry on with their production as usual. However, no further rewrites will be allowed during filming as that will constitute new material.

This applies to Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two, as well as to television shows like House of the Dragon and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

The WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers have not reached any substantial agreement with their negotiations. With no resolution in sight, many television networks will likely resort to more reality programming, similar to the outcomes of previous strikes.

Meanwhile, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two will hopefully be able to meet its June 2024 release date, unless there is a need to rewrite major scenes.
