On one hand, we have the ‘sun-girl’ concept and the world on the clouds. On the other hand, we have two kids who are lonely and driven by several misfortunes.

What I love about the film is how it portrays the adult world – a world as dim as the dark rainy sky.

Weathering With You will debut over television broadcasting for the first time on 3rd January on TV Asahi.

Makoto Shinkai has designed a special ending sequence for the upcoming over-the-air debut. An encouraging message which suits the current condition of the world will be added.

The extra ending scene will be one minute long and will only premiere for a single night on 3rd January after the anime’s original ending credits.

Some preview images have been revealed which show a part of the message along with the breathtaking scenes from the anime.

The film conveys the message-

“I want to overcome severe weather and difficulties with you.”

This message will be modified as Japan welcomes a new year after going through the severe pangs of the coronavirus pandemic.

Weathering With You first premiered in July 2019 in Japan and quickly rose to the #7 highest-grossing spot amongst Japanese films. It is now on the #8 spot after Demon Slayer: Mugen Train overtook it.

About Weathering With You

The anime film originally premiered in 359 theatres and 448 screens in Japan in July 2019 and is now the 7th highest-grossing domestic film of all time in Japan.

It was also the highest-grossing film in Japan in 2019. The film has earned 14.02 billion yen (about US$129 million) in Japan as of December 8th.

In the summer of his high school freshman year, Hodaka runs away from his remote island home to Tokyo and quickly finds himself pushed to his financial and personal limits.

The weather is unusually gloomy and rainy every day as if to suggest his future. He lives his days in isolation but finally finds work as a writer for a mysterious occult magazine.

Then one day, Hodaka meets Hina on a busy street corner. This bright and strong-willed girl possesses a strange and wonderful ability: the power to stop the rain and clear the sky.
