The long-running apocalyptic series The Walking Dead may have wrapped its series finale in November 2022, but the franchise is still going strong, with many spinoffs currently in the works. The season 11 finale may have devastated fans, but it also laid the foundation for the various spinoffs.
The Walking Dead’s official Instagram reminded fans that in April 2023, we’d have two of our favorite TWD characters back on the small screen. The post revealed Maggie and Negan will return in The Walking Dead’s upcoming spinoff, Dead City, at the beginning of 2023. You can view the post below offering an exclusive look at the new spinoff:
The spinoff was announced in March 2022 under the title Isle of the Dead. But in October 2022, the show announced its final title, Dead City, featuring six episodes, and confirmed the release date for the show in April 2023.
The show’s synopsis or plot doesn’t offer any details, but we know few things. We know there is a time jump after The Walking Dead’s series finale, starting Dead City a few years after the original series ended.
Lauren Cohen’s Maggie showed an interest in traipsing new hunting grounds in the series’ final episode, which will probably end with her in New York, where Dead City takes place.
We don’t know how Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Negan ends up in the same city as Maggie, but it probably wasn’t a mutually decided decision. By the end of The Walking Dead season 11, Maggie tells Negan she will never be able to forgive him for Glenn’s death, and Negan is remorseful of this realization.
But Morgan did reveal in a previous interview that the audiences will get a chance to see the “old Negan” in Dead City. Does that mean Negan realizes Maggie will never forgive him and stops trying to turn a new leaf, slipping into his old ways? We’ll know the answer to that in a few months when the show premieres on AMC.
The new pictures from the upcoming spinoff definitely show the duo return to their old dynamic, but we know they’ll try to mend their relationship and work on their bond in Dead City.

The Walking Dead: Dead City is an upcoming television series in The Walking Dead’s TV universe. Eli Jorné will serve as showrunner, who co-created the series along with Scott Gimple. AMC announced the spinoff in March 2022.
The spinoff will follow Maggie and Negan’s adventures through New York City as they look for Maggie’s lost son, Hershel.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan will reprise their roles as Negan and Maggie, respectively, along with new and old cast members. The series will premiere on June 18, 2023.
