A forest shaman appeared and asked her about her actions with the bear while Hild was camping. The shaman understood her intentions and left. Hild returned to the village in the end.

1. Chapter 189 Discussion
Having a character-focused chapter is always great in this series. Hild getting a vision of the shaman set this chapter well, and fans liked everything about it. It seems she’s slowly healing from the past and hoping for a bright future.
As Hild connected with nature in this chapter, she experienced a vision that helped her overcome some hatred. Will Hild move on from her hatred for Thorfinn and build a better future? Was her vision part of a fortune that is to come?
I hope, in the next chapter, we see more developments in Arnheid’s Village. The native village will be performing a ritual which might cause conflict among both settlements. Let’s wait and see how the following chapters progress.

Chapter 189 of the Vinland Saga manga has been released on Friday, Dec 24, 2021. The chapter title has not been leaked yet.

4. Recap of Chapter 188
This chapter starts with some Norsewomen spotting a bear and fleeing out of fear. A group from the village checks the bear attack area and finds it odd a bear is seen in the winter season.
Some men from the group mention how the problem lies with the bear entering their settlement. They state it’s better to kill it before it causes any more trouble. A man says they’ll gather some men and hunt it down.
Hild states she’ll go alone as the bear will notice a huge group and flee. She forbids everyone from entering the forest of the south for three days. The group feels it could be dangerous, but Thorfinn understands and lets her do her thing.
As Hild tracks the bear, she examines the bear’s tracks. She finds the bear is looking for food based on the surroundings of its path. Hild, following the tracks, thinks it’s been many years since she tracked a bear. She realizes she spends time teaching kids being part of the village.
She recalls when Karli asked her why she and his dad, Thorfinn, always fight. Karli stating, ‘Time heals all wounds,’ asked her if it was time to heal yet. He kept asking Hild if his dad did something wrong and apologized for it if he did.
Karli also mentioned that his dad is sorry, so Hild should forgive him for Karli’s sake. Back to tracking, Hild finds that the bear took down prey, and it’s still fresh. She tracked the bear to its home and assumed it entered into hibernation as it got its fill.
Hild decides to head back, as the bear will not be a problem anymore. As night approaches, she camps in the woods. Hild observes the noises in the forest and finds it peaceful. She thinks one day she’ll take Karli hunting when he’s older.
Suddenly Hild hears footsteps and sees a human-like figure. She finds a bear-headed person. The bear-person asks Hild why she did not kill the bear. She explains how the settlements have taken part of the bear’s territory, which led to it not getting its food before winter.
Stating it’s their fault, she says the bear didn’t attack anyone despite its hunger. With the bear now hibernating, she didn’t want to interfere with nature’s way. The bear-person then asks why Hild claims to understand the bear, even though one of their leaders was killed by one.
She replies that was long ago. As day breaks, Hild prepares herself to get back to the village. Hild starts her journey back to the village and takes with her the surprising experience of meeting what might’ve been a forest shaman.

You can read the Vinland Saga by buying the manga from Kodansha USA. They are currently 12 volumes behind, with only 11 of 23 translated so far.
Currently, there is no official way to read Vinland Saga manga online. However, soon enough, there will be one. Kodansha Comics has announced that they will be providing digital comics very soon via InkyPen Nintendo Switch.
