It was a funny episode with lots of fighting and messy situation. We met Ryunosuke, a girl who has to dress up like a boy because of her father. She desires to be more like girls.

For this, her dream is to wear the sailor uniform. However, her father is between Ryunosuke and her dream. She idealizes Ran and tries to learn from her how to be more girly.

Episode 17 Speculations

Things will go romantic in episode 17 of Urusei Yatsura, titled “A Chest Full of Longing!! Wish Upon a Star.”

There is a high chance that the episode will be about some new lovebird or Lum and Ataru. It might also be about Rei and Ran. It is hard to speculate whom the title is really about, as there are so many lovebirds around.

The second half of the will probably be about Ryunosuke and her desire for a sailor uniform. We may get to see a new character. Let’s wait and watch.

Episode 16 Recap

Ataru, Mendo, Lum, and Shinobu go to a beach where swimming in the water is prohibited. There, they find an old man and a young boy cursing the sea and getting drenched again and again.

The boy’s name is Ryunosuke. The old man and Ryunosuke start fighting each other. When Ataru and the rest go to them, the old man tells them that they run a seaside cafe and they consider the ocean to be a traitor that disrupts their business.

Ryunosuke is not interested in the business, which is the reason behind all their quarrel. Ataru starts to leave as he thinks it is a family matter and they shouldn’t get involved in it.

Suddenly, Ryunosuke reveals that he is a she (she is actually a girl). Mendo and Ataru immediately turn back and rush to help her. Ryunosuke and her father continue to fight with each other.

Lum and the other three try to stop them by restraining them with chains, but even that doesn’t help. Ultimately, they give up and leave the father-daughter duo to themselves.

Ataru and Lum find Ryunosuke and her father wandering around, searching for a new place to establish their cafe. They reach Ataru’s school, and there, the old man offers Ryunosuke to wear the sailor uniform.

She gets ready to fight him, but thanks to Ataru’s interference, she loses. She still transfers to the school, and every girl in the class is now head over heels for her. Mendo gets worried about his losing popularity.

So he, with some other friends, beats up the old man and gives the uniform to Ryunosuke. However, she doesn’t accept it and says that she will wear it only after defeating her father.

When she sees Ran, she is reminded of the girl she looked up to. She asks Lum about her and sends her a letter. Ran thinks that she is a boy and it is a love letter. She doesn’t listen to Lum even when she tells her the truth.

Ryunosuke wants to meet Ran so that she can learn about all the things that a girl does. She imitates Ran and tries to be like her, but everything gets ruined by Ataru, leaving Ryunosuke’s dream incomplete.

About Urusei Yatsura

Urusei Yatsura is a manga series by Rumiko Takahashi. It has a total of 374 chapters and was published from 1978 to 1987. Its anime adaptation received 195 episodes from 1981 to 1986. A new anime adaptation with selected stories began airing in October 2022.

In the series, a humanoid alien race invades the Earth but agrees that if the protagonist wins in a game of tag, they will leave it unharmed. Ataru wins against the alien girl, Lum.

Lum misunderstands and thinks Ataru is proposing marriage, and starts living with him and joins his high school. Ataru is a trouble magnet and gets stuck in weird situations pretty often.
