Chicago Med wrapped up season 8 at the end of May, and the season finale said goodbye to yet another One Chicago doctor. Will Halstead said goodbye to the series long back, but his departure brought back another OG cast member of the series who left the show two seasons ago.
That’s right, Torrey DeVitto’s Natalie Manning made a surprise cameo as Will left Chicago behind, completing their endgame and seeing their characters’ happy ending together. The actress spoke to ET, commenting on how easy it was to slip back into Manning’s shoes, and it felt like “no time had passed.”
She admitted that Nick Gelhfuss, who plays Will Halstead, asked her to return in his farewell scene to give their characters the “happily ever after” they deserved. Read her complete statement below:
My agents got a call asking if I would come back, and then I personally got a call from Nick Gehlfuss. Nick is like a brother to me. It was pretty much an instant yes to come back and see this out with him.
He and I both felt like our characters didn’t get the ending they both deserved together, so it was really nice being able to come back and give them that “happily ever after.” Stepping back into Natalie’s shoes felt like coming back home and seeing family. It felt like no time had passed.
She will always be such a big part of me. It was a joy getting to step back into her [shoes].
DeVitto had left the show after her contract with Wolf Entertainment was finished, in search of challenging opportunities. The show wrote a complicated end for her character, which almost seemed poetic since so many of her hardships were at the forefront of the show’s storyline in the earlier seasons.
Now that Will, Natalie, and Owen, who also returned in the season 8 finale with his mother, have left Chicago to start their own lives, it’s hard to say if they’ll look in the rearview mirror. The series was renewed for at least another season in April 2023, so there’s scope for them to have another cameo, but nothing’s set in stone.
I loved that they ended up together. I was always rooting for them. Right now, I think it is the last time you will see them together, but I guess in the land of Dick Wolf, you never know…
