The upcoming Assassin’s Creed: Nexus and its Bizarre Nose Connection

Ubisoft is riding the high waves caused by Assassin’s Creed Mirage, a grand success. It became Ubisoft’s most successful financial title in the first week of launch. Ubisoft is also currently working on 11 Assassin’s Creed titles.

In a recent interview with Gamerant, Assassin’s Creed Nexus’s director Olivier Palmieri revealed how having a virtual nose in-game in the VR-based AC Nexus would keep the player’s brain “grounded,” especially when playing in a dark room.

While mentioning a nose for an Assassin’s Creed title seems quite bizarre, Olivier Palmieri explained why this creative choice is pivotal for a great user experience.

Citing the first Doom title, he said that people got sick from the title because they were looking at a screen that was moving all around with no anchor points.

This primarily stems from the fact that players focused on the motion, not the rest. The human brain, Palmieri mentions, likes to have fixed references and elements on screen.

The nose, in-game, seeks to achieve this as with the real-life vision for the human vision system. The nose helps “grounding the brain, making it think something is fixed on the screen.” This is known as the cockpit effect.

While they could not introduce a cockpit, the nose seems to do the trick. This is a method they tested in 2014 with different beaks, and it seems to work.

He also mentions that the nose will not be obstructive because it has been designed in a way to keep it out of the line of sight. Olivier also noted that players generally do not find it unless someone says the existence of the nose.

The fact that Ubisoft and its developers are putting in so much research and effort to ensure that players don’t get nauseous shows that they have put in the work for Assassin’s Creed Nexus. Players hope that Nexus will not be a half-cooked VR title when it releases on November 16th.
