Starving humans on Earth, dead people on an abandoned station on the moon – Netflix’s upcoming K-drama The Silent Sea is filled with post-apocalyptic terror.
On December 10, Netflix released the official trailer for the Gong Yoo and Bae Doona starrer thriller series. The Silent Sea underwent multiple delays, but it finally offers the two hottest K-drama actors’ highly-awaited comeback.
The trailer opens to vast dryland, previewing the effects of humans running out of basic resources on Earth.
A stoic Kim Jae-sun (Heo Sung-tae) calls Dr. Song Ji-ahn (Bae Doona) for help, whose power as an astrobiologist shows as she sits beside a tiger inside a glass case.
After a near-death experience as their spaceship crashes and almost falls off the moon’s surface, team leader Han Yoon-jae (Gong Yoo) and the team move forward to investigate the Balhae Station.
Ji-ahn looks determined to find the answers to the abandoned station from the get-go. Meanwhile, the team slowly realizes the lunar station (and their mission) is covered in the darkest secrets ever imagined.
A lobby filled with dead bodies, a bio-signal implying someone has been alive all this while on the abandoned space station, screams, and of course, Gong Yoo’s neck tattoo – The Silent Sea is filled with incredible moments that will make the wait for fans, worth it.
In an interview with The Korea Times, Gong Yoo described his love for The Silent Sea. He shared that he wanted to do the sci-fi thriller the moment he read the script.
As for Bae Doona, seen in Netflix’s zombie thriller Kingdom, she took on the project as she loved adventurous series and wanted to push her creative boundaries.
The Silent Sea does promise a thrilling series, leading to the audience questioning multiple things at once.
The K-drama will answer the mystery behind the mass murder or suicide, how to replenish resources, and more in its eight episodes.
The Silent Sea will premiere on Netflix on December 24, 2021.
About The Silent Sea
The Silent Sea is an upcoming South Korean sci-fi mystery thriller series based on the 2004 short film titled The Sea of Tranquility. The short movie was written and directed by Choi Hang-yong, who is also directing the series for Netflix.
The drama includes a star-studded cast of veteran actors Gong Yoo, Bae Doona nad Heo Sang-tae along with Lee Joon.
Set in a dystopian Earth in 2075 where food and water are scarce, a team of space explorers are tasked with a mission to bring in samples from an abandoned research station on the moon. The 24-hour mission includes Han Yoon-jae the exploration team’s captain, Doctor Song Ji-an, an astrobiologist and Captain Ryoo Tae-seok, a head engineer.
The Silent Sea will premiere on Netflix on December 24, 2021.
