Gong Yoo and Bae Doona Have Different Aims In The Silent Sea Teaser

With less than a month to go, Netflix dropped the official teaser for the upcoming K-drama, The Silent Sea, on November 26.

The K-drama series stars veteran household names such as Squid Game’s Gong Yoo and Bae Doona, Lee Joon, Heo Sang-tae, and Lee Moo-saeng.

From the very start, the plot of The Silent Sea revealed the contrasting aims between Gong Yoo’s Han Yoon-jae, leader of the exploration team, and Bae Doona’s Doctor Song Ji-ahn, an astrobiologist.

Yoon-jae is a righteous team leader focusing on his member’s safety first and only doing what he has been ordered to, without prying anything. Meanwhile, Ji-ahn specifically asks to be on the dangerous mission to find the “answer” to the abandoned research station.

The Silent Sea’s teaser takes the audience closer to the eerie feeling of something not quite right, right from the start. A few seconds into it, as Ji-ahn states that the odds of their entire crew surviving is “less than ten percent”, the team starts finding mysterious things in and around the Balhae Lunar Research Station.

A brief scene even shows a shocked teammate finding dead people in spacesuits in a lobby of a spaceship.

As Yoon-jae says that they have to only “do as they’re told”, the constant frown and questioning look on Ji-ahn is a dead giveaway that they will eventually have to fend for themselves.

Based on the short film The Sea of Tranquility, the series writer Park Eun-kyo initially thought of adapting it into a feature-length movie rather than a show. The team later realized that it would “be a shame to limit” the vast universe and story to just a movie. Hence, The Silent Sea was brought to life.

The Silent Sea is riding on high expectations because of its star-studded cast and the famous team behind the series. The K-drama will hit the Netflix screens right on Christmas, on December 24, 2021.

About The Silent Sea

The Silent Sea is an upcoming South Korean sci-fi mystery thriller series based on the 2004 short film titled The Sea of Tranquility. The short movie was written and directed by Choi Hang-yong, who is also directing the series for Netflix.

The drama includes a star-studded cast of veteran actors Gong Yoo, Bae Doona nad Heo Sang-tae along with Lee Joon. 

Set in a dystopian Earth in 2075 where food and water are scarce, a team of space explorers are tasked with a mission to bring in samples from an abandoned research station on the moon. The 24-hour mission includes Han Yoon-jae the exploration team’s captain, Doctor Song Ji-an, an astrobiologist and Captain Ryoo Tae-seok, a head engineer. 

The Silent Sea will premiere on Netflix on December 24, 2021.
