The Resident Might Be Renewed for Season 7

Ian Anthony Dale, who stars in The Resident, expressed optimism about the show’s chances of being renewed for a seventh season.

Co-creator Amy Holden Jones initially wrote the season 6 finale, “All Hands on Deck,” to serve as a final farewell to the series. The episode tied up loose ends in Conrad and Billie’s relationship and showcased Leela’s promotion to an attending surgeon.

Additionally, the hospital faced and overcame yet another potential crisis, ensuring its continued ability to provide aid to those in need.

Despite these positive developments, executive producer Andrew Chapman has stated that the fate of The Resident will not be officially determined until later in April or May.

In an interview with TV Insider, Dale, who plays Dr. James Yamada in The Resident, discussed the potential for a seventh season of the show.

While acknowledging some negative updates regarding the series’ future, Dale remained upbeat as he spoke about his experience and collaboration with the cast.

He also expressed hope that more episodes would be produced in the future.

I had such a great time on that show. From the first conversation I got to have with [creator] Amy Holden, I knew that I would be sort of the resident playboy, free agent, and there were several wonderful potential suitors for my character, and we got to see him end up with a couple in the short time I was on the show. The cast was extremely welcoming and so kind. I felt very comfortable there, and it was a character and a job that I thoroughly enjoyed getting to experience, and I’m holding out hope that they put the sets back up and give it another go for one more season, but fingers crossed.

It’s not the first time that a medical drama’s renewal has been decided at the last minute. In 2022, Disney’s 20th Television faced a similar situation with 9-1-1, 9-1-1: Lone Star, and The Resident, where their renewals were only confirmed shortly before the network’s upfront presentation.

During that time, the financial aspect of long-running dramas like The Resident was the concern, rather than just the ratings.

Dale highlights that the most significant red flag: The sale of The Resident’s sets and props, indicates the potential cancellation of the show.

Nonetheless, Fox might reconsider and give Conrad, James, and the rest of the cast a proper final season.

In recent times, the series has been going through a lot of changes. In addition to the uncertainty surrounding its renewal, The Resident had to navigate a significant shift when Emily VanCamp departed the medical drama before season 5.

VanCamp had been portraying the character of Nic Nevin since the very beginning, and her romantic relationship with Conrad was considered by many to be the heart of the show.

It’s quite an achievement for the series to have been able to carry on without her and continue for a few more seasons, irrespective of what might happen in the future.
