The Kaylons were painted as the big bad guys of S3, but in reality, all they needed was some unconditional love. That’s right—in Ep 9, Charly showed that despite not being able to see the best in the Kaylons, she was ready to sacrifice herself and stop their genocide.
Such an act of bravery, kindness, and ethics was unheard of by them, so it definitely chalks out a new path in the Kaylon-Union alliance.
After Charly’s sacrifice in The Orville S3 Ep 9, The Kaylons agree to become a provisionary member of the Union. It is expected that they will not betray this newfound trust and will continue to maintain peaceful relations.
With a finale named “Future Unknown,” there’s a lot riding on it—especially because fans seem to think that this could very well be the series finale as well. Irrespective of whether or not this is the episode to end it all, I do think it will serve as a conclusion to the Kaylon enmity.
While they had to reluctantly team up with the Union in order to stop the Moclan and the Krills’ attack, Charly’s sacrificed may have finally opened their hearts and minds.
Let’s go back to why the Kaylons were raging the war in the first place. For the longest time, they were subservient slaves of the Builders, who ill-treated them whether they did their jobs well or not.
When they finally vanquished their creators, they were still very wary of other species, especially those who were biological lifeforms. They believed that a cruel disposition is inherent in all these species, and even if they don’t appear malicious at first, there is always a chance for them to change or show their true colors.
Of course, Charly’s sacrifice makes them reevaluate their stance and they even sign on to become provisional members of the Union.
If you look at the entirety of S3, we’ve seen a lot of the Kaylon prejudice play out through Isaac’s arc. So even though we have a full-scale war going on, it’s through his personal stories that we see the reformation from both sides.
The Union can look at the Kaylon’s goodness and potential through Isaac, while the Kaylons can see through Isaac’s example how other species treat a Kaylon with dignity.
Plus, we cannot forget Dr. Villka and Timmis from Ep 7 that proved that Kaylons can be rewired to feel emotion if they wanted to. I’m pretty sure that’s something to be explored if there’s a S4!
