James Wan has posted a fresh BTS shot for The Nun announcing the return of another unique character.
The 2023 horror film sequel is a follow-up to 2018’s popular Conjuring spinoff, The Nun. The infamous Valak will return on September 23, 2023, as Taissa Farmiga’s sister Irene will again be called to investigate a murder of a prince in 1956 France.
In addition to Farmiga, The Nun 2 is expected to mark Bonnie Aarons’s comeback in the titular role. The sequel will also introduce Storm Reid to the horror franchise.
The Nun became the most successful installment of The Conjuring Universe, generating over $365 million against a $22 million production budget. Thus, the sequel to this blockbuster was always on the cards.
Michael Chaves was brought in to direct The Nun 2. This is the same Michael Chaves who directed The Curse of La Llorona and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It.
This past month confirmed that Farmiga will be returning for The Nun 2. But she isn’t the only actor making a comeback.
James Wan, the film’s producer, posted The Nun 2 BTS image on Instagram. Along with announcing the start of production on the horror prequel, Wan tagged actor Jonas Bloquet, confirming that he will also make a comeback in the sequel.

Where does Nun 2 fall in the Conjuring Franchise?
The Nun 2 would be the third chronological story in the Conjuring Universe, following only a few years after its predecessor and taking place a year after Annabelle: Creation.
The Nun 2 is reportedly set in 1956 France, roughly fifteen years before the events of the original Conjuring.
Given the ending of the original movie which saw Frenchie bringing Demian Bichir’s Father, Burke, and Sister Irene back to civilization, it will be fascinating to learn about his role in The Nun 2.
Some fan theories suggest that Valak might try to possess another critical character for a brief period so that the timeline does not get obscured. Others say that with Bloquet making a comeback, it looks likely that Sister Irene may try to purge Valak out of her friend and fail.
Only time will tell how these fan theories stand out. The Nun 2 will hit theaters on September 23, 2023.
