The Mysterious Connection Between Twins! Is Maki Stronger Than Mai?

Gege Akutami has been making waves with the latest chapters of Jujutsu Kaisen!

Chapter 149 had particularly shocking developments and concluded the fight between Maki and her father, with Maki getting a huge powerup and even a new weapon.

The previous chapter finally exposed the twisted ways of the Zenin clan, which were hinted at throughout the series. Chapter 150 leaks hint at Maki going on a well-justified and much-deserved rampage! The cost of Maki’s new strength, however, was steep.

SPOILERS AHEAD! This page contains spoilers from Jujutsu Kaisen.

Maki has always been stronger than Mai. Although Maki had lesser cursed energy, her physical strength and weapon mastery surpassed Mai’s sniper skills and rudimentary Cursed Technique.

Maki has grown stronger after losing all cursed energy through Mai’s death. Her strength and aura now rival Toji Fushiguro’s.

1. Why Is There A Difference Between Them?

While Maki was born with lesser cursed energy than a regular human due to heavenly restriction, Mai had some cursed energy– more than a regular human but still less than a regular sorcerer.

Neither of them inherited a technique from the Zenin Clan, but Mai did develop an Innate Technique.

The reason neither of them were able to progress any further for a long time has to do with both of them being twins. Mai revealed in Chapter 149 that she’d always known why twins were considered inauspicious among sorcerers.

Cursed techniques consider all twins one individual– like one soul in two bodies. Maki and Mai are connected, which holds each of them back.

Maki’s heavenly restriction prevents Mai from progressing with her Innate Technique, while Mai’s cursed energy holds back Maki from reaching Toji’s level of physical capabilities with heavenly restriction.

2. Who Is Stronger?

Maki was initially stronger due to heavenly restriction making up for the lack of cursed energy through physical prowess– even though her cursed energy was lower than normal humans but not as low as Toji.

Regardless, she was much stronger than Mai physically and skilled with a wide range of cursed tools and weapons.

Despite her skill with a handgun and having more cursed energy than Maki, Mai’s Innate Technique, Construction, wasn’t very impressive. She could use it only once a day to create one bullet.

Maki is stronger than Mai after losing her connection to Mai and her cursed energy following Mai’s death. Her complete heavenly restriction has made her as physically strong as Toji  Fushiguro.

3. How Does Mai’s Death Impact Maki?

Mai took all the cursed energy shared between them with her as she died. With the connection between them severed, Maki’s heavenly restriction is more complete making her as physically capable as Toji.

Mai also made Maki one last weapon with the remaining dregs of her cursed energy– a sword that looks chillingly exactly like one Toji used during Gojo’s Past Arc.
