The Last of Us S1 Episode 6: Release Date, Recap, and Speculation

The Last of Us is prepared not to give its viewers a breather with intense episodes every week where we’re either sitting on the edge of our seats or reaching for the tissues. But episode 5 did it differently – it had our tear-filled eyes glued to the screens as we met and said goodbye to Henry and Sam in the same hour.

Joel and Ellie had found new allies, but of course, the show can’t let the duo have a continued relationship with anyone other than themselves, so they kill them off. I can’t go past the opening credits without my comfort blanket and hot chocolate anymore! So apart from a cry-session-inducing scene, what can we expect from episode 6?

1. Episode 6 Synopsis/Speculation

Joel and Ellie haven’t had a moment to process the loss of Tess, Henry, and Sam, but in the next episode, we may see the two bond over the shared grief. But as we know, there’s a reunion coming next week.

Joel has been looking for Tommy since the show’s beginning, and he’ll finally reach Wyoming, where he’s settled with Maria. It’ll be interesting to see the dynamic between the two brothers after this vast time gap.

The preview for episode 6 shows the two share an emotional moment when they meet after so long, but when Joel asks the ex-Firefly for his help with Ellie, things will turn sour.

The two will dredge up the events of the past, the moments Joel thinks Tommy holds him accountable for and thus the reason for their bad blood. We’ll also meet Maria, who we know from the games, and I can’t wait to see the show’s take on the leader of the Jackson settlement.

The preview also focuses on Maria teaching Ellie to put her trust in others carefully. Is blood thicker than water? Can family only be limited by blood? Does Ellie have any reason to doubt Joel, who’s protected his precious “cargo” so far?

Kin will come soon on HBO Max, but when is that going to be?

5. Episode 5 Recap

The Last of Us S1 Episode 6: Release Date, Recap, and Speculation
Joel & Ellie in The Last of Us Episode 5

In the last episode, Joel and Ellie were held at gunpoint by Henry, and we’d assumed that it’s a bad guy. But episode 5 opened with the explanation behind Henry and Sam’s story. The two brothers were on the run from Kathleen, the Kansas City dictator who was hell-bent on killing Henry as she blamed him for her brother’s death.

Henry and Sam come across Joel, trying to make a run for it after running out of food and wanting an out from Kathleen’s incessant hunt. But the only way out was through the tunnels filled with the infected, and the brothers were not skilled at violence, thus recruiting Joel’s help. Henry explains to Joel why Kathleen was hunting him, telling him that he had to turn over Kathleen’s brother to FEDRA for Sam’s leukemia medicine.

The following day they make it to the surface, only to be sniped at by one of Kathleen’s men. Joel rushes to the sniper’s location as Kathleen’s group descends on the other three, demanding Henry, for which she was willing to kill the children too.

Joel was ready with the gun, prepared to execute Kathleen before she could kill Henry, but suddenly, the area was filled with the infected. A “bloater” was rampaging, bent on killing rather than infecting, and it took down Peter, while a little infected girl killed Kathleen.

Joel and his group escape unscathed – or so they think. Sam reveals to Ellie his infected leg, and Ellie uses her blood to cure him. But Sam turns overnight, attempts to kill Ellie, and nearly succeeds until Henry shoots him with a headshot.

Devastated after having to kill his brother, Henry turned the gun on and shot himself, leaving Joel and Ellie to burn their corpses and head westward.
