The Handmaid’s Tale has been an unsettling yet riveting watch for all its fans. The show’s Season 4 finale ended with June “Offred” Osbourne escaping from Gilead after Commander Waterford.

Season 5 premiered on Hulu on September 14, 2022, the first two episodes picking up the story from the previous season’s finale. The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 will return to Hulu every Wednesday with a new episode.

Ahead of the Season 5 premiere, the show was renewed for the sixth and final season. This means the next season will end the tale of one handmaid rising to stand for them all, one way or another.

The Handmaid’s Tale

The Handmaid’s Tale, to recap, is a fictional dystopian future set in Gilead where handmaids are imprisoned in every household simply for providing her commanding family a child. The series is based on Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel of the same name.

Since the first season, the show has surged high to grab the minds of its viewers. The series has won several awards over the years for the plot and actors’ performances.

Now back with Season 5, the show focuses on June’s mission to reunite with Hannah and end Gilead’s dictatorship over the oppressed. But standing in her path lays her former mistress and recent widow Serena who vows to get her revenge against June and rise to the position of power in Gilead.

The first two episodes focus on two sides of the story simultaneously. The episodes distinctly highlight June’s PTSD from her time in Gilead and Serena’s plotting to maintain the thumb of power her late president had over the messed-up society.

In the first episode, we see June’s doubt if she wants to take on Serena after finally escaping Gilead, but by the end of Season 2, we can already see her deciding to take down the woman who haunts her still.

On the other hand, Serena’s path leads her to prove that she needs to return to Gilead, where she will provide for her own protection. She orchestrates a devious plan to bait June into returning to Gilead out of Canada’s relative safety.

The two episodes also highlight that though Offred has escaped from Gilead, she is not truly free—and neither are the other handmaids still living under the twisted rules of the city.

The show has continued with Season 5 in a consistent tale of power, politics, and the subtle rise of the beginning to the end. With generally favorable reviews, Season 5 is off to a good start, and viewers are agreeing with the way the story is continuing so far.

The Handmaid’s Tale will return with weekly episodes every Wednesday on Hulu, continuing Offred’s story to a hopefully peaceful ending.
