The penultimate episode of season 5 of The Handmaid’s Tale premiered on Hulu this Wednesday with the reveal that Commander Lawrence was behind the furthering of Gilead’s goals. Knowing his true face, June steers clear of his offer, but Lawrence plans to stop her permanently from destroying Gilead’s image.
The upcoming finale will set up Lawrence against June and detail his rise to become Gilead’s face. But will June be able to dodge his attacks and save herself and her family to fight the next battle?
1. Episode 10 Synopsis/Speculation
Commander Lawrence will try to put down June and rid himself of the last obstacle standing in the way of Gilead’s rise. June and her family’s life is in more danger than ever with Lawrence backed by the commanders of the world.
Episode 10 will also show how the mastermind of Gilead will secure his place in the country by marrying the former Mrs. Putnam and taking Janine as their new handmaid, but we can expect some big twists coming our way in the finale.
Janine has been pushed towards her breaking point and might play a key role towards defeating Lawrence. Because as we can see in episode 9’s end, Lawrence is already targeting Offred.
Hannah’s story might have reached its climax in episode 9. But the upcoming finale might drop hints about her future in the final season. What fate awaits her in Wife School, or if June can finally free her daughter from Gilead?
Nick and June may have said their goodbyes, but we feel they’ll meet again soon because Nick will not allow the commanders to kill June. We even see Nick ask Tuello to help protect June even when he is gone.
Is that a bad omen for Nick, considering many Gilead commanders seem to have lost their lives this past season? And what about his baby with Rose? Will the child come into the world healthy or be plagued by Gilead’s illness?
Serena may have made her escape, but who’s to say that the stranger might not deliver her and Noah back to the Wheelers at first chance she gets. We must wait until the finale airs to see what fate awaits the Wheeler’s handmaid.

5. Episode 9 Recap
Tuello unearths the location of Hannah’s Wife School and initiates a mission to rescue Agnes and the other handmaids in training. June and Luke demand to watch the live feed, hoping to have Hannah with them soon.
But their hopes are dashed when the mission goes sideways, the three battalions are killed, and the girls remain in Gilead. Lawrence calls June and informs her that he has decided to hold Hannah there, and baits her into going to New Bethlehem again. June shares some scathing words with Lawrence and gets off the call.
Meanwhile, Serena’s treatment under the Wheelers is as bad as any Handmaid’s. But she finds a way to escape nonetheless at the Wellness Center’s Grand Opening, rushing away in a stranger’s car with Noah in her arms.
Commander Lawrence asks the former Mrs. Putnam to marry him for their mutual benefits and sets a target on June’s head after the discussion with the other commanders. At the vigil, June and Emma are shot at, and June tackles the child to the ground as the scene cuts to black.

The Handmaid’s Tale is an American dystopian television series created by Bruce Miller for Hulu. It is based on Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel of the same name.
Set in the fictional dystopian state of Gilead, where fertile women are kept as “handmaids” and are subjected to child-bearing slavery, the series Offred (June Osbourne) and her fight for her freedom from Gilead, along with all the oppressed.
The series has covered four seasons worth of runtime, and the fifth season will premiere on Hulu on 14 September 2022.
