In episode 12, titled ‘Together with the Duke…,’ the much-awaited moment finally happened when Duke met his mother for the first time in ages.
Coming straight to the point, Duke’s mother, Gerbera, asked him to break the curse by spring or she will pass the family title to his brother, Walter.
Duke also shared his feelings with his mother but got a very unexpected response. Duke, who is usually calm, raged when his mother called Alice a lowly maid.
Later in the episode, it was revealed that Duke’s mother was best friends with Alice’s mother, but after Sharon died, she changed completely.
Further, Duke’s mother was actually proud of how her son stood up for Alice, indicating that she is not actually how people think she is.

Episode 13 Preview & Speculation
The 12-episode series finally came to an end, and unfortunately, Duke was not able to break his curse. With Gerbera giving him an ultimatum, I wonder if Duke will be able to find a way soon.
Seeing Gerbera’s reaction confirms the theory that her coldness towards Duke is nothing more than a facade.
She’s raising her kids tough to prepare them for the politics, diplomacy, and criticism they will have to face within noble circles in their future once they’re fully grown and have to represent the family name.
Later in the episode, it was revealed that Duke was cursed in front of the grave, but the grave’s owner is still unclear. Moreover, it seems like the Duke’s curse, Sharon’s death, and Gerbera’s changing personalities are all connected.
There’s definitely a lot more going on that will be revealed in season 2, where Duke will continue his search of finding a way to break his curse. Also, I’m excited to see how Duke and Alice’s relationship unfolds.

Episode 13 of The Duke of Death and His Maid (2021) will be released as a part of season 2. Season 2 has been officially confirmed and is expected to premiere by late 2022 or early 2023.
Episode 12 Recap
After receiving the letter from his mother, Gerbera, Duke gets ready to visit the main residence. It’s a big day for Duke, so Alice does her best to cheer him up. Duke thinks to himself that he will tell his mother about Alice.
Duke and Alice arrive at the mansion after a long and tiring trip. Viola receives him at the doorstep and takes him to her mother’s room. Duke’s mother tells him to call it a day and sends him to bed so they can talk in the morning.
As Gerbera comes out of the room, she mistakes Alice for Sharon. The head maid reveals to Alice that her mother and Gerbera were very close, but after Sharon passed away, Gerbera started behaving differently.
The following day, Viola takes Duke to the place where he was cursed. Duke recalls how someone grabbed him from behind when he was looking for a four-leaf clover.
The witch cursed him for loving no one, being beloved by no one, and to live a life of misery.
While walking out of the garden, Duke meets his mother, who tells him to meet her for dinner. Viola tells Duke how lucky he is since at least he lives away from their mother.
Later that day, Duke joins Viola, Walter, and his mother at the dinner table for the first time in ten years.
Gerbera tells Duke that his father is hospitalized, so they need to decide the family heir as soon as possible. She asks Duke to break the curse latest by spring; otherwise, she will make Walter the family heir.
Duke also tells his mother about Alice, saying he wishes to marry her someday.
His mother angrily calls him to forget it, claiming he was born into the aristocracy, so he is not free to love whoever he wishes.
Duke loses his temper when his mother calls Alice a lowly maid and confronts her for the statement when she never checked on him for years.
He leaves the table, leaving Gerbera proud of how he has grown up into a man. In the post-credit scene, Alice waits for Duke to fall asleep before saying that she loves him too.

The Duke of Death and His Maid is a 2017 supernatural manga by Koharu Inoue. The manga was serialized on Shogakukan’s Sunday Webry website and finished its run in May 2022.
The story revolves around a young duke named Bocchan who was cursed by a witch in his childhood. His curse can kill anything he touches, making him completely isolated from his loved ones to save their lives. He lives in a mansion on his own but is accompanied by his maid and butler.
He has quite the relationship with his maid Alice and the two grow closer throughout the story.
